From the Publisher
First published in 1896, Dr. Brown's classic on the Cabell family of Virginia remains the starting point for anyone researching this family. But the book is far more than genealogy. Beginning with William in 1723, Cabells helped carve America out of the wilderness. They fought in the French and Indian War, and were heavily involved in events of the Revolutionary War. Dr. Brown has woven part of his book around the diary entries of Col. William Cabell, Sr., committee of Safety in the Colony of Virginia. You can almost feel Cornwallis and Tarleton getting closer in the summer of 1781 as they burned their way up through the Carolinas toward Williamsburg and Yorktown. Other entries in the Revolutionary War period include Col. Samuel Jordan Cabell, the hero of Saratoga under General Morgan, and Cabell men who served in the William and Mary Company at Yorktown. Hundreds of other biographies include John Cabell Breckinridge, vice president of the US with James Buchanan, and later a general in the army of the Confederacy. The 1994 edition of this classic includes full color plates of the Cabell windows in Frome, England which are thought to date back to the 15th century. And you will be happy to learn that a completely new "reader-friendly" index has been added to make it easier to find people. The book is hard-bound in royal blue, with the Cabell Crest gold embossed on the front. This edition also includes a linkage to people in "20th Century Cabells and Their Kin", by Randolph W. Cabell.
