This is a very innovative dvd. It shows the Black Crowes performing, and "recording" in a large 2 story cabin, before a live, "packed", enthusiastic audience, in an informal setting. This shows the "actual recording" of songs for the album "Before the Frost...Until The Freeze". There are a few songs that were recorded & filmed in the cabin, without a live audience, but most of the songs were recorded before the live audience. Also, you get some documentary elements mixed in. However, everything was filmed in a very informal setting. You get to see the actual "making" of an album.
This is not one of those gentle, "intimate" acoustic performances. Here you get the real thing, electric guitars, keyboards, drums, a banjo, a fiddle, a petal steel guitar, and maybe even more. A lot of the "stuff" on this dvd, was edited out of the album cd "Before the Frost", but everything on the album cd "Before the Frost" actually came from recordings seen on this dvd. So, the Crowes "experiment" was successful, you get a great dvd, plus a recorded album. The camera angles are great. This was "experimental", but it was well planned, well filmed, well mixed, well performed, thus resulting in a great innovative result. I applaud the Black Crowes for their innovation & pioneering effort. Chris has excellent interaction with the crowd. The songs are all great. Plus you even get 2 bonus songs. You also get commentaries by each of the band members. The first song has Rich sitting on the floor, playing a sitar, which is a large Indian (as in the country of India) guitar. I've never seen anything quite like it, but he does an excellent job. I was very impressed with Luther Dickinson's slide guitar play. Chris is an excellent lead man, spokesman, comedian & lead singer. Rich and the rest of the band are all impressive also. This is a "must-have" for any Black Crowes fan period. Thanks!!!

Really enjoying this dvd; it provides an opportunity for those of us who were not able to attend the recording sessions the ability to experience it to an extent. It is fun to watch the interaction between band members and to hear Chris' sense of humor. The Crowes are not known for much stage talk when you see them live...unless Chris goes into one of his tirades and those are always fun. This a great snapshot of the recording process and a band doing what they do best...making music. Enjoy!

The only thing better than listening to the album is watching it be created!,
This review is from: Cabin Fever (DVD)
This dvd is awesome! I loved the album Before the frost.... Until the Freeze when It came out and love it more now watching the dvd of them cutting the record. You get to see the band working through the tunes and little pieces of the brothers working up the tunes alone. Just an amazing insight to the process behind the album. The Crowes are one of those rare bands who strive to go somewhere they have never been on each record, that always makes you wish you were a fly on the wall while they were creating them. Now you are. Very few bands are this gracious to their fans, creating these unique moments and sharing the journey with fans. They will and always will be one of the truly great bands in music. It is always a pleasure to see where they are going to go next, and now we are all invited to get there with them.

Set the wayback machine to 1969-1972 and journey with the Crowes back to a time when musicians had a lot of hair and made real rock music, with lots of country/americana thrown in. It's fitting this was recorded at Levon Helm's studio in upstate NY. Like Mr. Helm and The Band, the Black Crowes hail primarily from the South, but are making great, organic music up North. This project, combined with Warpaint and Warpaint Live, shows that 20 years into it, they're making some of the best music of their career right now. Not only that, but they really are in a good space energy-wise. Keep up the good work!!

I love the direction the Black Crowes have gone with Warpaint, and now with Before the Frost. Something I always forget until I watch a live concert, is what a good backup singer Rich is. He harmonizes really well with Chris. I also think Luther Dickinson is perfect for them right now, with the type of music they are playing. It's cool to see a band, 20 years in, but more relavent now than when they started. I think their music is better and more sincere now than in the 90's. And I loved them in the 90's. I will watch this DVD frequently. Also good to see Levon Helm during the interviews.

For All Amoricans!,

Like most Amoricans out there...I couldn't wait to get my hands on Cabin Fever. "Before The Frost...Until The Freeze" CD captured live on DVD. I found it to be very laid back. I was hoping for more of the older Crowes style, but was very impressed with the dynamics and chemistry that these guys have developed over the years. I've been a big fan since the first album came out. I've seen a lot of their live shows. Cabin Fever hit me different. I've watched it a few times since my purchase. It has grown on me a great deal. I like the direction that the Crowes have taken. With that being said....I am a true Amorican, and that I will continue to follow that direction with them. Peace!

The Crowes pick up where the Stones left off...,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Cabin Fever (DVD)
The only halfway decent band out there today to pick up the Stones mantle and continue to rock the nation are the Crowes. They combine the best of the Faces and the Stones to continue the musical journey into the new millenium. This DVD captures their raw energy and wonderful musical virtuousity. Great stuff!

I loved this video. I only wish I could have been there when it was recorded. I would have liked a little bit more, though. Most of the songs recorded are from the downloadable portion of the new album. As I have not been able to download them, it was nice to hear those songs. I would have liked to see them recording some of the songs I know from the album though.

A documentary/concert recording of great music!,
By Baberufus (West Jordan, UT USA) - See all my reviews

Great music from a great band, all captured on film! The Black Crowes really came back strong with the "Before The Frost/Until The Freeze" album. The sound quality is top notch, and the musicianship displayed by all band members is totally pro! I had the opportunity to see the Crowes in concert last month, and I was absolutely floored by the intensity, tightness and musicianship of this band--they've never sounded better! Luther Dickinson (who already was a major figure on the jam band scene with the North Mississippi Allstars before joining the Crowes) fits perfectly into this band, and is featured prominently throughout. The backstage and behind-the-scenes footage is also enjoyable.
A great DVD to buy in celebrating 20 years of great music from the Black Crowes--highly recommended! |
