Editorial Reviews

Karin Krog, Norway's leading jazz singer, has re-united with Swedish ace piano player Bengt Hallberg. He is the top jazz piano player in Sweden but has not performed or recorded for many years. This album was recorded in the famous Rainbow Studio in Oslo during the days of the 2011 Oslo Jazz Festival where they made a much celebrated performance.

This is my 32nd Karin Krog album to purchase (yes, I am a huge Karin Krog fan). The Krog-Hallberg duo has recorded two great albums in the 70s and 80s, i.e., "Two Of A Kind" and "A Song For You", and this is the third one. Krog's plain straight-ahead singing in the mid range perfectly matches with the Hallberg's somewhat simplistic piano. The selections are mostly standards, many of them are often recorded tunes. Hallberg shows his mastery in stride-style playing and "Time After Time", which is often played as a ballad but here played as a medium tempo stride tune, is a great example. Another exemplar playing can be heard on "Give Me A Simple Life". Hallberg is also quite good at a ballad style backing. A great example of such playing is "Spr". This tune is Duke Ellington's "Prelude To A Kiss" given an obscure title. Of all the duo albums Karin recorded with a keyboardist, my current ranking is: "Two Of A Kind" (with Hallberg) > "Cabin In The Sky" (this album) > "With Malice Toward None" (Nils Lindberg on Pipe Organ) > "David Frishberg & Karin Krog" = "Together Again" (with Steve Kuhn) = "A Song For You" (with Hallberg). So if you have heard any of these albums and you liked it, you will never be disappointed.
