This beastie is just the thing for laptops like many recent Apple ones that have a combination headphone/mini-Toslink port. To work neatly, you need to convert from the mini-Toslink to standard Toslink, and make a right angle turn. This adaptor does both, allowing you to use any Toslink cable you already have.

This lil' adapter was exactly what I needed to output optical audio from my macbook pro to my home theater's receiver. Perfect!

BUT...

I use this setup to connect my Apple laptop direct to my HDTV, enjoying perfect sound.
This works perfectly with Mediabridge Premium Toslink Cable (Optical Digital Audio Cable) converting my Apple Laptop's optical Mini Plug to Toslink. Because it is a right-angle adapter, it eliminates strain on the toslink, conveniently allowing it to drape to the floor before being routed directly to the TV.

Apple does not currently support full regular HDMI connection. The optical mini plug must be used for sound. Sound is not sent through the Mini DisplayPort/HDMI adapter - only video.

I just received my mini-plug adaptors from this site, and it's hard to quantify the amount of difference it has made to my playing of itunes over my imac, when I had always plugged in the headphone jack as an ordinary analog connection and straight into the analog inputs in my Cambridge - 540R v3 - 6.1 Channel A/V Receiver - Silver. Well, it's incredible, and just another of the seemingly endless improvements you make in so many little aspects of your life when you go with a macApple iMac MB418LL/A 24-Inch Desktop and start reading up on all the little extras they barely even mention in passing. Like many of the people that have already reviewed this item, there's very little that can go wrong once you pull off the little clear plastic protective cover and manage to find the right input in the back of your receiver, which took me a couple tries (looking backwards and upside down and not referring to the manual like I should have). Once you hit all the right holes and push the right buttons, this set-up blazes away like nothing you have heard in itunes before. Shake Your Money Maker I should add that getting the adaptor in itself is essential to use the imac's optical outlet, yes, it's a 3.5 mm toslink plug that fits right into the headphone jack. But not just that, the right angle of this particular product makes it very easy to reach round the back and plug in the standard toslink cable. After that, and given all the above, just sit back and enjoy having a fun computer, excellent intuitions, and fantastic sound.

Works great on both MacBook Pro and Airport Express for converting to toslink optical. Not much else to write about it. Seems solid construction and clips to toslink cable well. I leave it attached to a toslink cable also bought from amazon and no problems.

I got this for my Macbook Pro (early 08) and the sound is perfect for what I need. I connected my optical cable to this and my home theater to use with Frontrow and it's great!

This small adaptor allowed me to connect an optical receiver to a MacBook Pro. The sound is great!

I needed a mini Toslink adapter to use with my AirPort Express and this right angle gadget fit the bill. I'm very pleased with my purchase--and the price was right.

There are a few of these on Amazon and I wasn't sure which to get. I got this one because of the Super Saver Shipping (I bought some hard drives too) and the better reviews. I'm glad I did. The toslink cable "clicked" wonderfully into this adapter. I have it plugged into the back of a Mac Mini as a home theater system and it has worked beautifully. The right angle doesn't really help or hurt my setup but I would imagine if I ever need it for my MacbookPro, I will be very glad I got the right angle.

Works great! The right angle tidies up my cabling a lot. I use it to connect a Mac Book Pro to a Yamaha stereo in conjunction with a Tripp Lite A102-02M Digital Optical Audio Cable, 2x Toslink - 2M (6ft).
