5.0 out of 5 stars Cables galore!!
I just received this book and am pleased with the patterns I see here. All of them are nice, with only one novelty type hat. That hat could actually be made without the long braids on each side, and then it would be just a nice cabled hat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reviewing: "Cables--Mittens, Hats & Scarves"
"Classic, deceptively easy to make, and with unisex appeal, cables are considered by many to embody the essence of knitting. The beautiful twists, turns and sways of a cable can be accomplished using just a few simple techniques, and the mittens, hats, and scarves in this book provide the perfect small-scale projects for letting your imagination take flight"...

5.0 out of 5 stars Cables galore!!, February 4, 2008

This review is from: Cables: Mittens, Hats & Scarves (Vogue Knitting on the Go!) (Hardcover)
I just received this book and am pleased with the patterns I see here. All of them are nice, with only one novelty type hat. That hat could actually be made without the long braids on each side, and then it would be just a nice cabled hat.

Here's a breakdown of what is in the book. There are a total of 21 patterns, but some include more than one thing(like hat and mittens). There are 11 hat patterns, 4 scarf pattern, 2 fingerless mitten patterns, 2 regular mitten patterns, and 1 baby mitten pattern, 2 neckwarmer patterns, 2 hat attached to scarf patterns, and 1 headband pattern. Overall a nice assortment.

There are no patterns rated beginner in this book. There are 5 patterns rated very easy, 8 rated intermediate, and 8 rated experienced. Some of the experienced ones are scarf patterns that have you doing several different cables at a time. Not really hard, you just have to keep track of where you are at.

The patterns here are classic, but not dumpy looking. Here is a list of the patterns included:
Cabled Cap
Double Cable Scarf
Drop Stitch Cable Scarf
Self Striping Gauntlets(on the cover of the book)
Cabled Wristlets and Hat
Cabled Neck Warmer
Bias Scarf
Baby Hat and Mitten Set
Bias Cable Hat
Traveling Cable Mittens
Three Cable Scarf
Traveling Cable Hat
Scarf with Hood
Mitten and Headband Set
Rolled Brim Hat
Cabled Helmet with Scarf
Striped Hat
Pompom Hat
Bomber Hat
Rapunzel Hat(this is the novelty hat)
Neckwarmer and Hat.

Guess it's time to break out the cable needle and get knitting! The Double Cable scarf and Three Cable scarf are beautiful!

4.0 out of 5 stars Update instructions please, August 19, 2008
This review is from: Cables: Mittens, Hats & Scarves (Vogue Knitting on the Go!) (Hardcover)
I agree with a previous reviewer, the pattern on the cover is unremarkable except for the yarn.

However, once you get inside the book, there are several good patterns for scarves (some that even guys might want to wear) and hats that are both interesting to knit and look good when worn. Also, most of the patterns will look good in inexpensive yarns, which is important if you are knitting for children or others who are a bit hard on their clothing.

Why Vogue doesn't include directions for knitting with two circular needles is a mystery to me.

Also, all of the charts are printed black on white, and not black on a colored background, as in previous books in this series. Much, much easier on the eyes, although some of the charts could have been enlarged to fill the page.

4.5 stars

4.0 out of 5 stars useful collection, June 2, 2008

Congratulations to VK for using new designers in this book. Really some lovely items. Cabled cap, double cabled scarf, bias cable hat, 3 cable scarf, traveling cable hat, scarf with hood and neck warmer and hat are just lovely. The cover gauntlets are very ugly and not a good sample of the book's contents. REcommended for all knitters and especially anyone looking for a quick project or a hat or scarf.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reviewing: "Cables--Mittens, Hats & Scarves", June 28, 2009

This review is from: Cables: Mittens, Hats & Scarves (Vogue Knitting on the Go!) (Hardcover)
"Classic, deceptively easy to make, and with unisex appeal, cables are considered by many to embody the essence of knitting. The beautiful twists, turns and sways of a cable can be accomplished using just a few simple techniques, and the mittens, hats, and scarves in this book provide the perfect small-scale projects for letting your imagination take flight" (Introduction)

This small compact hard back book delivers on that concept from start to finish. The opening section provides a detailed look at the basics which include yarn, yarn substitutions, how to read a chart, how to gauge correctly and many other useful things.
Then there are the diagrams showing how to front cable, back cable, work a yarn over, deal with fringe, joining rounds. Also included in this section are a glossary of terms and a small chart explaining the skill levels in the book.

Starting on page 24 with the "Cabled Cap" it is on to the projects. Each project has a color picture of the finished deal, detailed instructions, and a representation of the skill level needed. Primarily focused on hats/caps and scarfs, there are also a couple of patterns for sets of mittens/cap or scarf/mittens.

Of the twenty-one projects in the book, not a single one is classified as "beginner." Only a couple are classified as "Very Easy" which is defined in this book as "basic stitches, minimal shaping, and simple finishing." Most are either classified as "Intermediate" or "Experienced "which is for knitters "able to work patterns with complicated shaping and finishing" So this isn't a book for beginners.

Part of the "On The Go" series from Vogue this small colorful book is designed for those who have a lot of experience knitting. Knitter's that may find the lack of a variety in the projects a bit limiting as well as the fact that many of the projects are found easily on the web or in other books of more depth and variety.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Book For Learning Cables, January 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cables: Mittens, Hats & Scarves (Vogue Knitting on the Go!) (Hardcover)
I am a fairly a experienced knitter and decided to venture into doing cables. I bought this book hoping for clear illustrations and easy to follow directions - I found neither. The styles are great but I will have to utilize other books to figure out the pattern instructions. Not recommended for the inexperienced cable knitter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, September 16, 2011
This review is from: Cables: Mittens, Hats & Scarves (Vogue Knitting on the Go!) (Hardcover)
I went through this page by page in a store. I was looking for good scarf patterns and found only a few. If you are looking for fairly complex wrist warmers or hats you might consider this book. However the cover is misleading. Scarves should be a fourth or fifth item on the list of what the book offers.

For me there was not enough, even though I could have bought it for 1/2 price. Try to find a copy and look through it completely before buying to make sure that there are enough patterns for what you want to do.
