This device strips hdcp so that hdmi can be used efficiently for legal applications. Another splendid device that is cost effective, and allows honest people to use their devices as they see fit. I will be using it to record ps3 gameplay via hdmi. Excellent product! Anyone that is having issues with setup can visit youtube. They have excellent tutorials from owners of this device.

I wanted to use my TV (a Vizio XVT553SV) as the switch for my various sources using it's ability to pass the audio along via optical/SPDIF to my amp. The problem was that when I connected my home media center computer up via HDMI, the computer (actually, the drivers) insisted that the destination for the audio only had 2 speakers. Unfortunately, it appears that if the EDID (a data identifier used by HDMI to identify the devices to each other) the computer receives says the device has 2 speakers, there's no way to override it and tell it the ultimate destination is a more capable device - unless you're into the idea of generating your own EDID (*not* fun) and essentially creating a custom driver.

My solution to the problem was this box from Cables Unlimited. Instead of using the HDMI on the video card for the video and audio, I'm using the DVI on the card and the optical/SPDIF out on my motherboard, sending those two signals into the Cables Unlimited box and then sending the resulting combined output via HDMI on to the TV, which uses only the video and passes on the 5.1 audio to my amp. So, now I can watch video in 1080p with 5.1 from the computer and switch between the satellite, computer, and the apps (like Netflix) built into the TV and never touch the audio source on the amp - they all just come from the single optical port on the TV.

Setup was extremely simple - DVI cable and SPDIF cable from the computer to the Cables Unlimited box and a single HDMI cable to the TV plus power to the Cables Unlimited box and I was good to go. Literally less than 5 minutes of setup. No configuration, no switches to twiddle with, just plug it in.

I purchased this converter to use along with my high definition video source, Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle grabber and old non-HDCP monitor. The converter works perfect with highest video bands (1080p60) as designed. It is small but solid. The price to quality ratio is excellent and comparing its compact size with possibilities you can't get better tool for the job. You do not need to search further. I highly recommended this product.

Well made metal boxed converter that does the job.

Note that whether you input either optical Toslink or Digital Audio Coaxial for audio, you'll have both of these formats available on the outputs (i.e., the box also operates as a digital audio format converter). This is in addition to the digital audio being encoded into the output HDMI cable digital stream. I stream the HDMI output to my LCD TV and use the additional Toslink output to stream PC audio over to my Hi-Fi system. Works like a charm!

Don't make the same lazy mistake I made by ordering on impulse without doing due diligence on the internet, this item is WAY over-priced. Oh and BTW, this device failed to facilitate my BlackMagic Design IntensityPro recording video from the live camera HDMI output of my Samsung Galaxy S3. Don't have the testing gear to see if the box is failing to strip HDCP or maybe the phone is some weird format the IntensityPro is allergic to or if the box is just crap, does not matter, I gambled and lost. Nikon D800 HDMI output directly to the Intensity Pro works fine.

I purchased this item based on the two 5-star reviews here at Amazon, and had high hopes that it would work as advertised. My family has recently divested ourselves of our satellite bill, so I wanted to hook up an extra computer to stream shows from the web without spending the money on a dedicated box. The computer has DVI and digital audio out, so all I needed was a conversion to HDMI and I would be set.

The video is adequate, though I can't get the output to properly match my screen (the image is larger than the display, so the edges are cut off) which is not a big deal for watching video, but is just enough to cut off the start menu and taskbar in Windows, making it difficult to navigate.

The real issue is the digital coaxial audio, which appears to be broken on the unit I received. I simply cannot get the box to add audio to the HDMI signal. After changing cables and changing sound cards I still get no sound through this unit. At this point I'd be better off returning it and buying this instead DVI to HDMI Cable 6ft Male-Male (which is exactly what I'll do if I can track down the packaging it came in).

This product is not working for me. I've been trying to reach tech support for a couple of weeks, but they have not replied. Today I saw the following notice posted on their site:

"Thanks for your interest in Cables Unlimited products. Your business is extremely important to us. We are in a period of reorganization. During this period we are not accepting any new orders. This is an exciting time for Cables Unlimited and will be making an announcement soon regarding our future. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your continuing support."
