Tool Less does not equal less work,

I didn't read the 'tooless' in the description anywhere, and was supprised when they arrived. Using 110 punch down for years, this was kind of a learning curve for me. The wires press into the 'flip-cap' and then you close the cap to make the connection on these, leaving any extra wire hanging out the sides that need to be trimed. If you don't own a 110 punch-down tool, and your only doing one or two connections, this is a good way to go.

First, let me qualify my skill level. I am an IT professional who has installed hundreds of network jacks and can usually connect one in a couple minutes. A friend with a tight budget needed some wiring done, so we were lured in by the low price on this item. These have the most bizarre design I have come across, and do not include instructions. Trying to get the wires pushed down into the grooves was very awkward. You can't tell if it's making a good connection onto the wires since the metal is on the top part that you swivel down on to the wires. We literally spent hours trying to get 4 of these to make a solid connection. Spend a little more and get a better known brand and style. We are returning this junk for a refund. I'm usually pleased with the prodduct I get from Cables Unlimited. They need to drop this item and save their reputation. Too bad I can't give a negative star rating.

The only problem with these is the lack of instructions. It took me two hours to do the first one and two minutes to do the second one. Most of the two hours was spent searching for instructions and figuring out how to open the connector. There are instructions with photos on the monoprice website. Search for them there. These instructions fail to mention a couple of key things that someone who has never used one of these wouldn't know.
First is how to open the connector to get started. Pull on the top of the white plastic loop that goes over the cable opening to swing the cover apart. I spent a lot of time trying to separate them at pins that actually have nothing to do with the hinge mechanism. Second is the fact that the pictures in these instructions are for the 568B scheme. I am using 568A, so the orange and green wires need to be reversed, but once you understand that, then the numbers and colors printed on the side of the connector make sense. The green numbers on the connector correspond to the pin numbering of the 568A scheme. Third is the fact that when you lay the wires in place you need to seat each wire into the bottom of both slots that it runs through. The outer slots are very snug and I used the included black tool (which is apparently meant to be a lever to help close the connector) to help push each wire down into place, in combination with a good tug on the end of each wire. Closing the connector was easy for my large hands, but the lever could be helpful for some people. The instructions I found show how to use it this way and also the fact that the included zip ties go around the cable to secure it to the white plastic where it enters the connector (when you are done putting it together). I used a tester and each time I closed the connector they were 100% effective. The only time I reopened one was to change the wiring scheme from 568B to 568A while figuring out the instructions and that connector reseated correctly the second time also. Now that I have figured this all out, I am thinking that the reason the description says they are 110 punch down is that they wires are punched down, alas without the use of tools. These are an excellent value and totally worth avoiding the cost of buying a separate punch-down tool. The reason some people have given poor reviews is clear - lack of instructions. I suppose it might be even more confusing to those who are used to another method - i.e. using a punch down tool. Here are the instructions: [...]
