Book Description

June 5, 1998
This is a book for lovers of Portugal, lovers of nature, lovers of photography, and students of photography. Even native Portuguese may be surprised at what lies within the borders of their country. This book takes you on a voyage to a fascinating and remote place, on a nature walk through the rocks of Cabo da Roca, accompanied by stories of the past, of pirates, of streams that fall in cascades over beaches, of natural pools filled with sea urchins, and of plants that grow nowhere else.

Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca) already has the distinction of being the westernmost point of continental Europe (40 km from Lisbon), but Jose Romao combines his Ph. D. in biology with his lifelong dedication to photography to share with us his love for the natural beauty of this special place in his native Portugal. The breathtaking photos of the play of light on sea and land show why Romao, who was trained in the modern American school of nature photography, is now considered by many as the best Nature photographer in Portugal.

The photos are accompanied by text (in both English and Portuguese) describing the area and history of Cabo da Roca, Romao's adventures while photographing it, and the environmental threats to this idyllic place, especially for a species that is now going extinct. Throughout the text, Romao gives tips on how to photograph in remote locations, and technical notes on the filters, lenses, films, and cameras he used are included in the back of the book for the benefit of students of photography.

About the Author

Born in Faro, Portugal in 1958, Jose Romao has systematically explored the Portugese coast on foot. In his early childhood, he revealed an interest in painting and drawing and a fascination for colors, and with his father, he discovered that photography is both a means of expression and a fun activity. At 14, he learned the basic concepts of photography from his cousin, Joao Costa. At 17, he and his fellow students launched a photographic laboratory in his high school. Later, at the university, he exhibited his photography in the first two Encontros de Fotografia in Coimbra and in other expositions. In the United States, he refined his personal style and established himself as a landscape and portrait photographer. His images have been published in newspapers and magazines, for which he occasionally writes. In Monte de Caparica, Portugal, he is currently pursuing his specialty in photographic art with his company, Mil Cores (Thousand Colors)

This review is from: Cabo da Roca : Images of the Westernmost Point of Continental Europe (Paperback)
Wonderful photos in great paper impressions. Extra quality at all levels. It is a photo book with some history and biology of the places it covers. Also, is a tutorial book in the fact that the author didn't hidden his secrets and fully described the aspects behind all his photos. Great book
