Book Description

October 2004
For the bicentennial anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, Alfaguara asked Arturo Pérez-Reverte to narrate an account, with his particular vision, about the most famous naval battle in history. This combat faced the combined Hispanic-French Navy against the British, in the Spanish waters of the Cape of Trafalgar. The blend of historical accuracy and spectacular action together with the unique writing style of Arturo Pérez-Reverte makes these pages a passionate and exciting key piece to understand the events of that tragic day in October 1805, which changed the history of Europe and the entire world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trafalgar para nosotros los ignorantes, May 15, 2007

4.0 out of 5 stars Getting into the spirit of Trafalgar, July 4, 2011
I found the book quite fascinating though I had to delve a tad into the net for the background, finding how the battle was the final part of the Royal Navy's efforts to reduce Napoleon's naval strength below what he would need to mount his (already fading) invasion plan of Britain, for example. Overall, a wonderful feeling of being on the spot, the sailors, up and down rigging, lines, yardarms and the like, the numerous sails, t'gallants, mains, royals and jibs galore, and gunnery detail, carriages, firing sequences, even to the dreadfully young powder monkeys, and all an authentic ambiance to go with. The research is meticulous so we can see what is fact and what is additional fiction to add coherence. I laughed aloud and was drawn to sighs in points, especially in his homage to the common man, 'la gente', so well set forth and, lamentably, so true to life to this day, but a point of obligatory mention. Years ago, I visited Victory in the UK; she is still there, open for view: read this lot first and you'll get a lot more mileage from the visit. One detail that I did find odd: the author states his having looked solely into French and Spanish original records but no English ones: given the meticulous nature of everything else, one wonders why. Eyes-closed recommendation from me anyhow and, as another reviewer mentions, a quick read, possibly on two grounds, a) it is not very long; and b) the phenomenon of being swept along makes the book something of a page-turner.

This is a great way to learn about this piece of history, through a historic novel. Highly recommended. And the delivery system is great too.
