Grade 4-7-- This is a straightforward and beautifully illustrated explanation of a plant family that many people see in indoor gardens rather than in the wild. The book shines with full-color drawings and simple but technically accurate text. Cacti rely on their adapted stems for survival. Starting with this all-important characteristic, Lerner explains the adaptation for dry environments, reveals the nature of the cactus family, and shows how a plant works to gather and save precious water. In the final brief chapter, the author talks about the range of cactus and the unchecked gathering of desert plants that is causing some species to become threatened or even extinct. Schools and public libraries will welcome this succinct and lovely volume.
