5.0 out of 5 stars Another great story by Carey!
It was a great charcter ddevelopment book. Not many people could imagine that Kirk used to be so by - the - book. After all he has broke every rule in Starfleet and has been demoted. Still, the story turned out nicely. And the way Kirk tricked Spock, that was genius. There was only one thing, if McCoy is an ensign now it would have been a year or more between books...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not really memorable
This is a young adult book so the plot is pretty thin - just like the book itself - and rather straightforward and uncomplicated. Unfortunately, I do prefer a bit more twists and turns and at least a surprise or two. Also, I didn't like the fact that 99% of the book was told from McCoy's POV and then suddenly, for just two scenes, it switched to the bad guy's POV - it...

The book was a great adventure which takes us back to where it all began. Three raw cadets attempting to work out their differences and triumph in the best traditon of Star Trek lore.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kirk was a kid?, October 15, 1997

The first adventrue of Kirk, Spock and McCoy. This book was made for kids, but it does apeal to adults too. To see the beginnings of friendship and leadership by Kirk was good. Kirk was by book, and it was surprising. McCoy was witty and Spock was somewhat solid. The three of them trapped on a planet trying to thrawt a plan to kidnap a popular doctor. This book resembles novel Trek books quite well. I liked this book and I'm sure other adults will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome!, December 2, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Cadet Kirk: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy #3 (Paperback)
Cadet Kirk was a really cool story. I never thought he would be by the rules since he probebly broke every rule in Starfleet as a captian or admiral. Also I never thought Spock would ever approve of something Kirk does espesually because they've only met up a few times and Kirk is younger than Spock. That's part of why I enjoyed this book and if you want to go back to the beginning this book is a good resource.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not really memorable, December 29, 2010
This review is from: Cadet Kirk: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy #3 (Paperback)
This is a young adult book so the plot is pretty thin - just like the book itself - and rather straightforward and uncomplicated. Unfortunately, I do prefer a bit more twists and turns and at least a surprise or two. Also, I didn't like the fact that 99% of the book was told from McCoy's POV and then suddenly, for just two scenes, it switched to the bad guy's POV - it could've been handled differently, with McCoy hiding and listening to the bad guys' conversation or something; this abrupt change of POV was a bit... strange.

But I loved McCoy's monologues, his acerbic comments and his "OMG, we will so die here!!!" attitude, that was pretty funny. Kirk didn't click for me much here, but I did like the way the three of them - Kirk, Spock and McCoy - influenced each other's way of thinking.

So, all in all, a good book, a quick read but not all that memorable.

Once upon a time there was a decent scifi writer that became well known for her Star Trek books. She then wrote too many of them and stopped caring about internal consistency with her own writing or within the established universe. Weak writing + destroying canon=This book.
