This pin nailer is basically the Cadex CPB23.35 but with a redesigned blower button and an anti-dry fire feature (won't fire if you use all the pins/nails). I read a review somewhere that said Grex, Cadex and I believe Nikle all come from the same factory in Taiwan. There is definitely a similarity in the physical look and some design features.

I originally ordered the Grex P635. But after reading reviews I cancelled the order and ordered the Cadex instead. At the time, the Cadex V1/23.35 was offered by Amazon through Woodworkers Specialties. For a few dollars more I decided to get the V1 version because of the anti-dry fire feature.

The main reason I chose the Cadex over Grex was the ability to use the slight head brad nails. The review comparing the two models mentioned this was a nice feature since it would hold better than a smooth shafted pin. I know you can angle the pins differently in a series to minimize slippage, but the brad feature eliminates the issue all together.

The holes left behind by the headed pins is a bit larger than the smooth pins, but still very small and not visible unless you are right on top of them. With both pins and brads the holes are extremely small. I have noticed that if the light hits them at the right angle you do get a slight reflection. So you may wish to cover them with some putty or a dab of glue then sanded over.

The first project I used the nailer on was a cedar lined closet. I started with a 18 gauge brad nailer but finished with the pin nailer. The one thing that is obvious is the size of the nail holes. Even toe nailed, the cedar planks will sometimes show the 18 gauge holes. The pin nails are almost invisible. For this light planking, the pins are more than enough to hold them in place. For the trim (crown molding, corner molding, base board and door trim) the pin nailer has it all over the brad nailer. This was the original reason for the purchase. The finished product looks good without the trail of nail holes you usually see.

Practical use. The one thing I really liked was that when I had to remove a plank it came off clean even when I had to pull a nail through the back. I am not a professional installer and made a few mistakes in alignment and fit. With the bigger 18 gauge brads, this would almost always result in a split or broken plank. The 23 gauge brad nails pulled through without splitting or any noticeable damage to the planks. With the 23 gauge pins/brads, even if I wasn't perfect in the toe nail, the holes are so small they are not very visible and easily covered. You can actually rub the wood over them to cover holes.

The size and weight between the nailers is probably only a few ounces, but it is noticeable. The pin nailer is smaller and can be held easily for more extended periods of time without arm fatigue. The pin nailer is also very quiet. The brad nailer isn't loud but the pin nailer is more like a gentle puff sound. The compressor definitely does not turn on very often using this tool.

The double trigger isn't much of a nuisance and I got use to it very quickly. Not putting pressure on the ejection point took some additional time to get use to. I am careful not to have a finger on the trigger until I am ready to fire a nail. So far I haven't shot a wild nail or pin anywhere in other than where I intended it. The anti-dry fire feature is nice. A few times I have been nailing and it failed to fire. When I am working I don't always check the nails even though it has a visual hole. Nice to know it's out especially if you are in an awkward position and firing a row of nails.

I guess most air tools come with the connector now and I do prefer the swivel one (included) over the fixed straight back design. Overall this tool meets and exceeds my expectations. I worried about the smaller gauge pins/nails not holding well, but so far I haven't had any issues.

The only negatives are the case and the instruction manual. Both seem to be generic and not specific for this tool. The blow moulded case does not secure the nailer, it moves around inside. It looks like it can hold a larger nailer, probably the Cadex CPB23.50 2 inch nailer fits in the same case. I put a box of the pins below the nailer in the case and that keeps it from moving around in the closed case.

The instructions in the manual are not very clear and the tool model number is a separate label that was stuck on the manual. Even the label on the case appears to be an Avery stick on label. But if you have any experience with a nailer you shouldn't have any problems figuring things out.

Overall I am very pleased with this nailer. I will still use the 18 gauge brad nailer but only where a stronger nail set is needed and not visible. The brad feature and the anti-dry fire features are as advertised and I can highly recommend this over the Grex for those two features alone. This model was a bit more expensive than the Grex and the regular Cadex 23.35 but I think the added features were worth the 15 or so dollars difference.

First, I have not used this item extensively, but with that said I am very satisfied with the Cadex. This particular model has a new feature--"anti-dry fire with override," which I did not find on similar models (although I'm sure it will appear). It came with 7000 pins but I thought the shipping had mixed things up and the package only listed 4,000 pins; so, I e-mailed the distributor in Canada and received a reply within hours explaining things. Also, the distributor contacted me directly a second time after the sale to make sure everything was okay since he said they did not ship, rather shipping was through Amazon exclusively. Quality is good, but the instruction manual is totally worthless--can't find features advertised such as blow gun. Case is not a perfect fit, but okay (also probably made for Grex since it has florescent green latches (just don't care for the Grex green--personal). Chose this over other manufacturers because of the anti-dry fire and because it was featured in "Fine Woodworking" earlier this year. Shipping from Amazon has become slower and slower, so will probably look for another source to purchase.
