Great SimCity type game.,
By
This review is from: Caesar III (Mac) (CD-ROM)
Caesar III is a great game if you like the Sim City type city building sim. There is not too much conquest (e.g. Command and Conquer gameplay), as you can only assert direct control over your military units. The major challenge is to create a stable environment that sims will want to move into and work in. The includes building housing areas, markets, resource collection areas, trading bazaars, etc. If you do a good job, people will move in and work in all your buildings, allowing the city to make more money and grow. If you are interested in the above, I would highly recommend this game.

Exciting and disappointing,

Before I purchased a copy of C3, I had played a demo of the game and found it very interesting. I'm interested in ancient history and conquest, and the levels provided in the demo I tried were simple, but stimulating, much like the SimCity titles have been. However, when I actually tried the full version, I was disappointed. The first few directives you fulfill for Caesar are interesting and fun and can be challenging for the beginning player. But as I continued on with later missions, I started to get tired of the tedium of maintaining residences, trying to influence house growth, etc. The most fun for me was the warfare aspect of the game... being able to control your own phalanxes of Roman soldiers is a real kick. After several hours of trying to get your prosperity level up one or two points, however, (and this is required to proceed to the next level) even hacking up barbarians and Gauls gets old. So my advice would be to check out the game, but do it with caution. It is an interesting premise, but it definitely needs some tweaking.

Dear Readers:I've had this game for 5 weeks now...spent many a night up to 4 in the morning trying to keep out enemy troops (Roman and others) while paying back the Roman emperor. Game is fun for me and my 8 year old daughter. She likes to build a city but does not like the soldiers fighting that much. You'll need a powerful (G3) or better machine to play this and a large screen (17") or more is highly recommended. Great game... but my wife will not give it back until all the X-Mass shopping is done! 12/14/99. MajorAWH@aol.com

Hail, Caesarettes!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Caesar III (Mac) (CD-ROM)
When we got our daughter, now 12, an iMac, the rule was "school and research only/ no games." This Christmas, she wanted a Play Station. Horrors! As a compromise, we investigated games available for Mac, and settled on Caesar 3. It was a huge hit Christmas morning, and is the #1 thing with her and her girlfriends, who style themselves "Caesarettes" when they play. There is much to learn in trying to balance housing, roads, water, farming, industry, muncipal services, etc. -- not to mention appeasing the gods -- as you build the city. The challenges become greater as the city grows, and there are numerous optional sites in which to build the city, each with its own characteristics. Daughter has no interest in war gaming, so it is nice that there are several scenarios without military elements. It is rewarding to see the girls working together to play the game and hear their excitement as their city grows and prospers. I would recommend this game to any parents who have been reluctant to let their kids have a computer game -- there is lots of strategic thinking involved here, warfare need not be part of it, and it offers the opportunity for 2-3 kids to think and play together.

still engrossed after 6 months...,

Well, I guess this is a keeper, because I bought it last fall and I'm still working my way through it! This is a great title if you're tired of all the bangbangs that make you check your higher neural functions at the door; it takes real work to keep the tiny Romans happy, and before you know it, it's Thursday. I'm on the very last mission now, and I'm trying to make it last because to my vast disappointment reports are that Sierra has cancelled the Mac port of its similar title 'Pharaoh'. Oops, gotta go, my patricians are complaining about the Bread and Circuses again...

Very Addictive Caesar 3,

I found Caesar 3 a great mix between to the build-characteristics of Sim City and the goal-orientation of Civilization. The foundation of the cities isn't merely a random addition of buildings or people but much more structured than what I would have thought. Each level brings new challenges to face which you don't get with Sim City. I found myself "glued" to my computer both building and trying to figure out how to reach the goals. A must buy for a true strategist.

This is a really fun game! I got it because I like Ancient civilizations and I thought that it would be fun to play a game based on Ancient Rome. I was not disappointed! I even learned about some gods I hadn't know of before, and the game was fun to boot. It starts out on something of a tutorial, were you are the governor of a city and to be promoted to a better city, you have to meet certain requirements, such as prosperity and peace ratings. Sometimes you are required to give Caesar an urgent shipment of olive oil or wine, and if you don't, he gets mad at you. The graphics for this game are fun and pretty good quality. The only problem with this game is that level 8 is almost impossible to pass, so I have never made it to the end of this game. But it is fun just to play anyway. All and all, I would recommend this game to anyone.

Caesar 3 made me feel as if I was in Rome. My class is studying Rome now, and the game has nearly everything a Roman city needed and had. I would recommend this game to anyone.

this game rules. muff said. I got it when it came out and it had the elements of SIM city, warcraft and civilization that I was looking for. I mean C'mon, you can build a colliseum! you can train lion tamers. YOU CAN ASPIRE TO BE CAESAR! this game looks good and plays clean. you have ca campaign mode with strategy and then you can just build a city. no plot, just get down and dirty prosperous. this is one that captured me like I hadnt expected. give it a go. it rocks!
