An account, both factual and fictional, of the Gallic War of 58 to 51 B.C., narrated by a fictitious soldier in Caesar's army, which provides a somewhat more vivid and readable companion to Caesar's "Commentaries on the Gallic War."

challenging book,

This review is from: Caesar's Gallic War (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my homeschooled son who is 9 and his younger sister, both very advanced readers and history fans. The book was still a challenge. Wonderful in and of itself, its vocabulary, sentence structure and plot were above their heads. I had to concentrate real hard to follow the plot myself. Finally, I decided to read the book myself and retell it briefly to my children.
If I had to read it all over again I would carefully keep track of the names of Gallic chiefs and who they conspired with and against. So much of the book revolves around it! Bottom line: great book for older children perhaps, 11 (as recommended above)could be still too young.
