where's the map,
By A Customer
This review is from: Café Life Rome: A Guidebook to the Cafés and Bars of the Eternal City (Paperback)
I loved this book. The pictures and reviews definitely got me psyched for my upcoming trip to Rome. And, when in Rome, I had the best caffe and granita I could imagine.But...the book refers to a map, that I couldn't find in my copy. A map would've been very helpful.

This is more than a wonderfully descriptive book on cafes and bars. The layout of the book sets an ambiance that makes you want to pack your bags to fly to Rome immediately. Reading this book, I traveled to Rome and loved it.

Reading Cafe Life Rome is almost as good as being there. The beautiful photos and the wonderful stories about each of these family-run Cafes and their owners transport you to the Eternal City with its sweet way of life.An essential part of any trip to Rome is to visit the cafes, relax, enjoy the superb coffee, watch the Romani and soak up their world. This book helps you to find the best cafes in any area of the Centro Storico and should you care to, find one to make your own. Ready for La Dolce Vita? I recommend this book to help you find it

Rome like a local,
By
This review is from: Café Life Rome: A Guidebook to the Cafés and Bars of the Eternal City (Paperback)
Café Life Rome is best guidebook to unlocking the heart and soul of this city: it's cafes. After reading the delightful, in-depth stories of the cafes and their owners, we felt as though we knew each place the moment we walked in. Once cafe in particular, Caffe Accademia near the Trevo Fountain, became our regular haunt: a warm, welcoming place to have an espresso and gelato after a long day of sightseeing. The wonderful cafes this book led us to made us feel, if only briefly, as though we were't tourists.

Café Life Rome,

We haven't visited Rome yet to check out the 22 or so cafés reviewed in this book, but it looks to be a great guide to Rome's cafés.
Each review features interviews and stories about the café reviewed, information about the neighborhood, and info on the coffee and food served. As well as cafés, it features five or so of Rome's best gelato spots. All of which much helps to build a sense of anticipation to actually try these places!

Disappointing travel guide,
By Christina K. Hunnicutt "Knitting Fiend" (Fort Wayne, IN United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Café Life Rome: A Guidebook to the Cafés and Bars of the Eternal City (Paperback)
I bought this book as a guide for my week-long stay in Rome, and after a few disappointing caffe's and gelaterias, I left the book in my hotel room. Many of the places featured in this book are EXPENSIVE, but the author gives no indication of price. One example is his Vatican City Self-Serve caffe, where my mom and I played 48 euro for two salads and a plate of pasta! Also, there is no map, so I was cross referencing this book with my other travel books. If you're looking for a food guide to Rome, save your money and look elsewhere.

I was in Rome during the last week of Aug. 2011 and tried to find some of the cafes listed in this book. Most of these restaurants are far away from the tourist sites (Colesssium and Palatine Hills) so you need to get an Italian to help you find some of the places listed in this small book. The description of the cafes may have been accurate when the book was published but as of August 2011, some of the cafes are racking in the bucks with cheap imitations and high prices. You will not find many of the locals at some of these cafes since they know the real thing when they taste it. It is better to buy a copy of Italy Michelin and find out which cafes/restaurants serve the best coffees in Rome.
