Works great -- when it works.,

This review is from: GE Cafe™ 2.0 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven (Kitchen)
There are two serious design flaws in this unit, and GE won't own either of them. First, the metal handle on the microwave gets really hot when you have things cooking on the stove, and I mean you-need-a-potholder-to-open hot. Secondly, and much more problematic, the touchscreen can't handle heat and/or moisture and shorts out. You would think an appliance designed to be installed "over the range" might actually be able to function in this environment. (It's actually installed over the matching GE Cafe gas range, so compatibility should not be a problem.)Our first touchpad fried in less than two weeks and the store gave us a replacement microwave without complaint. Had to install it myself -- again. Then the touchscreen shorted again a few months later, but after waiting for days for a service call, it started working again when the tech arrived. He refused to do anything, since it was working fine at that time. But of course, it has shorted out once again. If GE would acknowledge that something is wrong in the design and provide an upgraded touchpad, that would be fine. But I suspect that they plan to keep replacing the touchpads until we run out of our extended warranty and then we'll be left high and dry. Don't think I'll buy anything from GE again.

GE Cafe Model CVM2072SM2SS,

This review is from: GE Cafe™ 2.0 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven (Kitchen)
Purchased a GE Cafe' Microve (model CVM2072SM2SS) in May 2009. Control panel failed 14 months later (out of warranty period) and price quoted for replacement part alone was $650. While I was looking at microwave ovens I thought the touch control panel seem delicate and was concerned about its reliability. Well my instincts were correct. Sorry I purchased this model and should have gone with my initial reaction instead of buying based on the look of the unit.

Design and reliability problems,
By Joseph P. Cusick (Cherry Hill, NJ, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: GE Cafe™ 2.0 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven (Kitchen)
Purchased this microwave and the matching gas oven during March 2010. Microwave fuse blew out after five months. After several calls and appointments, the service man fixed it. May 2011 (1 month out of warranty) the display pannel (with all of the cooking contols) stopped working! GE has not been helpful yet, but I'll update this review if there are any positive developments. The GE cafe oven has been fine thus far. As others have stated, damn that is one hot handel. The microwave was designed and made by brick layers (no offense to masons).

GE Cafe Microwave - Don't buy,

This review is from: GE Cafe™ 2.0 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven (Kitchen)
I had the touch pad short out and was quoted $700 to replace it. I too am done with GE. I will not support a company that does not stand behind their products. I will replace the entire microwave and regrettably throw it in a land fill!

Same problem that everyone else has had,
This review is from: GE Cafe™ 2.0 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven (Kitchen)
While it took longer for ours to fail, the touchpad shuts down with heat from the stove below. It's getting worse, at first it took a large pot and lots of heat to make it stop working. Today we pulled a pot of water from the back of the stove to sit on the burner below the controls and it stopped working (only the residual heat from the pan). We also had to have the Cafe dishwasher replaced because the controls for the drying cycle failed and melted all the interior parts. I will give GE credit that they replaced the dishwasher with a new one at no cost to us (5 year warrenty on controls for that unit). It seems to me that GE should stand behind these products since they are marketed as high end items, if they want to keep their reputation. We can't recommend GE.

WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!!,
This review is from: GE Cafe™ 2.0 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven (Kitchen)
We had the same problem everyone else has had. Touch screen has been replaced once w/in the first year. Microwave exterior got so hot when cooking on the stove top (with the vents on by the way) that it couldn't even be used it froze up. The touchpad went out AGAIN. GE was no help, didn't care!! Now we will have to buy another over-the-range microwave from another brand and kitchen appliances won't match. Have had other problems with the other appliances also. Will not buy GE again. Don't waste your money- they are also expensive!

Another touch pad complaint,
This review is from: GE Cafe™ 2.0 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven (Kitchen)
I too have a GE Cafe microwave and gas range set. I purchased them together because I thought they looked great. I also thought they were made a little better than the standard department store appliances. I was wrong! Our touch pad has died. The touch pad would periodically stop working if it became too warm when cooking. Usually this was a result of using the right front power burner on the range. After it cooled, the unit would work again. This was the case from day one. I wasn't too concerned, but did try to avoid letting it get too warm. Now the touch pad will not respond at all. It is stuck on with 24 seconds remaining and the vent top is open too. I called for a service and can expect to pay $99.00 for diagnostics plus parts and labor. I am assuming it will be at least $300.00 to repair. The cost of the microwave in 2008 was $800.00. I wish GE would recognize that this is a major flaw and make a replacement part to correct the issue instead of continuing to cash-in on its customers!!

Everyone else is right!,
This review is from: GE Cafe™ 2.0 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven (Kitchen)
Who'd've thought that more than 30 years after their invention, a microwave could be made that works so poorly. We've had the same problems everyone else had, especially with the control pad not working. In fact, today it shorted out while the "finish" alarm was sounding, so there was no way to stop it without going to the fuse box and shutting off power to the thing. Yikes. Don't buy this.

GE Cafe(tm) 2.0 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave OvenI purchased GE cafe appliances for my kitchen remodel, replacing the GE appliances that were 12 years old, They were installed in April 2010, 18 months ago. The over-the-range microwave oven touchscreen has shorted out according to the message on the panel. This is the third error message I have seen on the panel in two days. It does not work. It is installed over the GE Cafe dual fuel range so, as others have stated, compatibility is not the issue. One rack in the freezer portion of my GE Cafe refrigerator has broken also. These are marketed as high end appliances and I paid over $7000 for them. I would not recommend GE to anyone at this point. My husband has just lost his job and so paying the high cost of the repair (GE will only tell me the cost of the diagnostic visit--$80, parts and labor are extra)or replacing the microwave is not an option right now and the blasted thing beeps all the time so it is now unplugged and totally unusable. Don't buy GE!!! I wish I had done more research before purchasing these appliances. The quality and engineering have definitely gone downhill and GE is not worth buying. GE Cafe(tm) 2.0 Cu. Ft.
