5.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Get Much Better Than This!
I don't own a lot of chillout related CDs and there's a reason for that: Most of them are predictable with the same song used over and over again on various compilations that pretty much copy each other's ideas. I enjoy trip-hop and lounge music but it's very hard to find a flawless album that you can pop into your stereo or discman (whichever one's handy) and let it play...

3.0 out of 5 stars Slight Improvement Over Volume 5 of the Series
Jose Padilla and his endless repetoire of ambient tracks compiles number six in the Cafe Del Mar series.

Overall, I think this album has a better selection of tracks when compared to volume 5, but it's still not dud free. "Distant Invitation" by Rae & Christian, and "The Look of Love" by Dusty Springfield are below average in my opinion.

This review is from: Cafe Del Mar: Volume 6 (Audio CD)
I don't own a lot of chillout related CDs and there's a reason for that: Most of them are predictable with the same song used over and over again on various compilations that pretty much copy each other's ideas. I enjoy trip-hop and lounge music but it's very hard to find a flawless album that you can pop into your stereo or discman (whichever one's handy) and let it play without skipping a single beat but this is a rare exception. Aside from 'Chill Out In Paris 2' [mixed by David Visan], this is SO FAR the best I've heard in this genre and it's my first Cafe Del Mar experience so I was pleasantly surprised. Jose Padilla did a great job at compiling and mixing all this together and I'm curious to scope out anything else he's done. It flows at a very nice pace (mostly mid-tempo speed) and has many different atmospheres to keep it fresh and inventive. There's not a dull moment on here and while the entirety of 'Vol. 6' is amazing, I find myself especially enjoying Mandalay's breathtaking remix of "Beautiful" (I never tire from listening to this particular piece) and the world grooves of Nitin Sawhney's "Homelands" (I've been meaning to check his work out for a long time now) and the gorgeous "Adios Ayer". And, of course, anything by Talvin Singh is worth hearing... The whole thing is, really.

I truly love this and am more than impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect end to a perfect series, February 24, 2000
By A Customer
Jose Padilla has outdone himself with Vol.6, the final addition to his masterpiece series of compilations. He has somehow managed to bring music from every corner of the world, put it all on the same album and breathe life into it, making it a magical walk on the beaches of Ibiza. He starts the series with Talvin Singh's Traveller, a downbeat cinematic East Indian groove which sets the tone for track 2 Afterlife's "Dub" (who are these guys? They appear on a lot of his comps and they are AMAZING!). Dzihan + Kamien's "Hombase" is an EPIC jazz groove. As an earlier reviewer put it: "D&K are the future of music"... Mandalay follows with there correctly titled "Beautiful" - a crisp, sensual track sung by God's only daughter. This cd has it all: from Humate's beautiful ambient excursion "Bedrock", Endorphin's groovin' "Satie 1", to Moonrock's hip hop chill "Ill Street Blues", Jose Padilla keep's everything tight, crisp and clean and completely chilled. Insane. And to think he ends it on Dusty Springfield's "The Look of Love", to boot! What a classic track. There is no reason NOT to own this disc. Never mind the price, it's worth it. This series is the cream of the crop, don't miss out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Down tempo beats, for that warm summers night, October 15, 2001

This review is from: Cafe Del Mar: Volume 6 (Audio CD)
I believe strongly in music that makes an atmosphere, it is one of the first things that i look for when i first listen to a CD, and i belive that Cafe del Mar, Volume 6 does that. It is an album that launches right into its tempo, and holds that all the way through, very cruisy, mellow, something that you can keep in the background but still engross yourself within it.

But, that is part of the problem with this album. You will find that the album, although various in its track selection, does not actually 'peak' with energy anywhere. It is an album that is well selected, and it achieves everything that the Cafe del Mar series stands for; being mellow, and something that isn't going to be obtrusive.

So, if you like something that is going to have a bit of variety in its ambience, something that will actually build up to a section that has a bit more energy, then maybe you should look at Kruder and Dorfmeister's K&D Sessions. But if you like albums that you can have just in the background, something that you won't want to actually go and turn up the stereo for a particular song, then this album should cater you perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars In the best traditions of the Cafe Del Mar and Jose Padilla!, September 12, 2001
This review is from: Vol. 6-Cafe Del Mar (Audio CD)
Each compilation from Café Del Mar series is famous for its easy-listening & easy flowing style. One can't disagree that this music is compiled in such a way, that you don't actually notice how and where the music fastens or becomes slower, changes its general mood. At the same time, in each album you encounter dozens of musical styles, from classics, flamenco to electronic trip-hop and acid jazz. The 6th edition of Café Del Mar isn't an exception to the rule.

The record starts with amazing moving track, Talvin Singh's =Traveller=; great beats and interestingly inserted orchestral scores. Afterlife comes with their aerial, pleasing vocals and music in =Dub in Ya Mind=. A New Funky Generation surprises with a completely inflammatory track! - =The Messenger=; cool singing also here. dZihan & Kamien gives us very smooth song, =Homebase=; it sounds very relaxing and easy after energetic The Messenger. Mandalay's =Beautiful= is one of my favourites. It's so passionate, tender. Turn your bass to the fullest since this track has one of the strongest beats on the CD. Humate invites us to the world of electronic waves, winds and trans-mood in =3.2 Bedrock=. Endorphin comes with =Satie 1= which reminds me ANFG's The Messenger - the same fast and energetic. As for Nitin Sawhney's =Homelands=, it's one more surprise on the CD and the second track from my favs. While starting as flamenco, it continues with beautiful woman's vocals of more romantic wave, combining with again, orchestral scores; ac. guitar is in its best sound and the closing vocals are pure miracle! Rae & Christian are with their =A Distant Invitation= - don't know why but for me it's very the same as Satie 1 and The Messenger; in any case they are quite similar in its music structure and feeling. Bugge Wesseltoft's =Existence= is the most complicated and mystic song on the album - smth from jazz, smth from trip-hop, smth from classics! Paco Fernandez with Levitation feat. Cathy Battistessa is really great for the vocals; a very sentimental song! Marc Collin's =Les Kid Nappeurs Main Theme= is like a storm before the peace and quiet Jose Padilla's Adios Ayer which is very measured and light - my third fav, cause it really strengthens your desire for living! :) Moonrock with =I'll Street Blues= gives street-singing with unearthly electronic sounds. And Dusty Springfield is incredible with her aerial, soothing and warm =The Look of Love=! A great finishing piece - it seems that nothing could be better than it.

Well, this album is made in the best traditions of easy-listening compiling. Jose Padilla has proved once again that he's one of the best DJ of chill-out music! Of course, if you ever listened to any albums from Café Del Mar's series, you should take this one, too!

4.0 out of 5 stars really smooth and mellow, February 4, 2001
By
"wickedlollies" (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
Definetly the best way to describe it, smooth and mellow. It's a real chill CD. I first bought Cafe Del Mar 7, and then 6. I found 6 to be so much more sensual, and truely some of the vocals, melodies and rhythms on this can twist into you and wrap you up for the nite. I can't take my ears away from the CD when I listen to it! Outstanding Tracks...dZihan and Kamien 'Homebase', Mandaly 'Beautiful', Paco Fernandez/Levitation feat. Cathy Battistessa 'Oh Home' (unreal vocals) and my most favourite track-Humate '3.2 Bedrock' (it's like a light mix of soulful dance...just gorgeous). It's one of those CD's that's able to adapt itself to different type's of tastes, just gorgeous, and really recommended to anyone who's in the chill scene. The final in the Cafe Del Mar series produced by Jose Padillaand a beautiful one at that. Let's hope there's more to come in the future, and Cafe Del Mar will continue in it's lush soothing tones. Cafe Del Mar Volumen Seis, a beautiful compilation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good meal in a CD, May 30, 2000

(REAL NAME)
Starting from Café Del Mar Vol. 5, I'm hooked on Padilla's compilation! José Padilla structures his album like a good meal, starting with good appetizer of Talvin Singh's "Traveller" and close it with simple-yet-spicy Dusty Springfield's "The Look of Love". This CD is a must for those who enjoy good soulful compilation of funky music. My favourite is Mandalay's "Beautiful" and dZihan & Kamien's "Homebase". I still consider Vol. 5 as a personal favourite though.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the 10 CD series, May 30, 2004

I absolutely love this CD. I own all 10 of the Café Del Mar series and I think this is by far the best one. Numbers five and seven are also quite good as well. Give it a try!

I didn`t believe that i could hear something more Beautiful, sexy, laid back and melancholic until i listened to this one. It really is guys! Most impressive and rich sounds of music from the other side. The best of the series. Let me tell you, if you haven`t listened it, you have never fallen in love with a CD. Particularly Beautiful by Mandalay and Oh Home from Levitation with Paco Fernandes give you the feelin` of having listened the best thing ever. This is the one i couldn`t do without. Careful with Homebase, which represents the most contemporary sound of the century... Every track is a Delight. Thanks Padilla... We love you....

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good CD!, September 8, 1999
I certainly recommand this CD. Although Cafe Del Mar V.6 is not the best in its series, you could still enjoy amazing tracks on the album such as Beautiful by Mandalay. If you have not bought any Cafe del Mar yet, go for Volume 5.
