5.0 out of 5 stars Plush, Informative, Suprisingly Soulful, November 23, 2009
This review is from: Cafe & Restaurant: 50 Outstanding Dinner, Beer and Cafe Restaurants (Shop Design Series , No. 3) (Hardcover)
Bearing the title page title, "Cafe & Restaurant -- 3 50 Outstanding Dinner, Beer and Cafe Restaurants," this is a large-format hardback, cloth over boards in dustjacket, 188 pp with color illustrations throughout. English and Japanese side-by-side. Organized in categories: Dinner & Theme Restaurants, Beer Restaurants and Steak Restaurants, Cafe Restaurants and Fastfood Restaurants, Shop Data.

Over 44 Japanese restaurants from the mid-1990's are profiled. For each you get a description, interior shots, floorplans, and some exteriors.

A lot of these books are useful for capturing defunct trends. This book favors the handsome over the timely. I wouldn't mind living in some of these interiors. (With a few exceptions: "Harajuku HOOPTOWN" Ha!)

Here's the thing: the photography here is surprisingly warm and evocative, unlike much of the commercial photography one finds documenting late 20th century interiors.
