4.0 out of 5 stars Just Goes To Show...Don't Ever Judge A CD By Its Cover, March 28, 2004

This review is from: Cafe Samba (Audio CD)
I'll tell you. This CD really puts truth to the saying "don't judge a book (rather CD - in this case) by it's cover". I was contemplating whether or not to buy this album over another one because the album just looks so odd and unappealing. But I do remember that some of the best albums in my collection that were hidden jewels, had strange covers that were not very enticing. So in other words don't let a cover fool you. The music on here was pretty good. Maybe 1 or 2 of the tracks seemed monotenous and sounded similar to each other, but the others songs were pretty original and enjoyable. This album uses a lot of futuristic "space age" sounds. So that means....Lots of synthesizers, computer effects, etc. This is also a pretty relaxing CD. Just like the title suggests, Cafe Samba will remind you of music you would hear in a trendy, hip, cafe somewhere in Tokyo, Rio, Paris, London, or New York. Definitely worthwhile to check this album out if you like ambient, modern, electronic, Brazilian music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Boa Vinda A Brasil, August 2, 2003
This review is from: Cafe Samba (Audio CD)
Found this one at a local record shop and haven't stopped listening to it since I unwrapped it. There are a lot of New Brazil/Latin compilations out now and sometimes it is difficult to see which are the best. But after listening to this... What a terrific compilation this is!

What strikes me about this CD is that it feels so much more... Brazilian than many of the other comps out there. The sound, the charm and the element that makes the music Brasil. But don't get me wrong - the Italian bossa side will make you wonder "Is this the Meditteranean, or am I in one of the Copacabana beaches?" And the artists included here are terrific - and well known for the genres. Cuts to take notice with are by Camiel, a full version of the 12" Sepia remake of "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce", Soul Bossa Trio, Topaz, Italian Secret Service, Nicola Conte, Les Hommes and more. Check out the tracks here:

Time Passing - Dombossa
Latin Vibe - Um Beijo Na Boca
Jazzelicious - Sambossa
Camiel - El Alba
Barriere - Seducao
Sepia - So Tinha De Ser Com Voce
Soul Bossa Trio - Cascade of the Seven Waterfalls
Topaz - Corcovado
Italizn Secret Service - Drummer Boy
'J-Radical - Buweyah
Riolistic - Felicidade
Nicola Conte - Il Cerchio Rosso
Del Gaudio, Rossi & D'Angelo - Segundo
Les Hommes - Hommage
Latin Vibe - Sunset on Ipanema Beach

The only reason this didn't get the five star rating is because you can tell that a few cuts were taken from mixed compilations elsewhere (see Brazil Re-Mixed bur Buweyah and Sister Bossa vol. 2 for a couple of others). But if you're looking for that perfect CD for the summer, to pop in while on the beach or having a drink with a romantic, this is what you want. And FYI - this is the same label that brought you "Cafe Roma" and "Jazz Lounge", etc.

This is one of the first Brazilian compilations I found to have many great tunes to listen to. Highly recommend it! Nu Jazz Brasilia is another one I recommend.

I LOVE this CD! I listen it to it incessantly, especially when I am driving. This is the BEST music to listen to! You will not be disappointed if you purchase this CD. The jazzy, uptempo Brazillan beats will have toes tapping and heads bobbing!
