5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I had never heard of this. Rented on a lark. Found it fascinating, capturing the mood of gone time when sophisticated types partied in swanky joints. Go ahead. Indulge. LFB is beautiful. It will surprise you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sordid underside of 1950's glamour
This movie is based on a real-life scandal, the sting operation against call-girl operations in New York in the early 1950's that entrapped margarine heir Mickey Jelke, who had fallen in love with one of the targeted courtesans. This movie is based on a real-life scandal, the sting operation against call-girl operations in New York in the early 1950's that entrapped margarine heir Mickey Jelke, who had fallen in love with one of the targeted courtesans. It's a fascinating, if ultimately somewhat depressing, look at just how tawdry life in the chichi "cafe society" of 1950's Manhattan could be under the glittering surface. There aren't any really 100% sympathetic characters in this film, which undoubtedly causes some viewers a lot of problems. The costuming, particularly the gorgeous women's clothing (the "New Look" era is my favorite costume period along with the Regency and late Victorian/Edwardian eras), is first-rate.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVED IT, September 19, 2000

I thought this was a wonderfully acted, beautifully shot film. The dialog is also hilarious - really "period" and smart. If you like 50s movies, this one's for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Time would be better spent at a cafe, December 6, 1999
This review is from: Cafe Society [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is not a good movie. The acting is poor, self-conscious and unconvicing. You are never sure if the director is serious about the morality issues here, or making fun of an earlier time in history. I'm surpised this much talent made this little of a movie.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disgusting boring stilted - pure drek -NO STORY HELLO!, October 27, 2006
This review is from: Cafe Society [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I don't usually write negative reviews- I just turn ( off the movie or close the book) and "toss" . I am still bitter that I wasted an hour plus waiting for a story to unfold- any story. yeah- there were some glitzy costumes- pretty vulgar since they do have the look of "vintage cafe society wear circa 1995". However, this and the ample cocktails and flesh gimmick aren't enough to carry this tale- which doesn't quite qualify as a tale since a tale is a story.. right? This is more like a montage of parties and what some consider pretty but sodden faces. BTW, Frank whaley could have at least learned to sing for his one song. Nothing is uncovered here, there is not one iota of drama or intrigue, no relationships- just an attempt at witty dialogue. I turned off the set after seeing Peter G's bare back and butt - I'll never see him as classy ever again. This movie is gross and unappetising- I am still having a pity party for myself obviously, but really I cannot compare this movie with anything else I have endured- maybe I just have less tolerance for the garbage that is in mainstream.
