Book Description

Love, loss and latté...

"If today is a cup of coffee it has to be a big, piping hot café au lait, served in a bowl the way they often do in France. I drink it with my hands curved around the bowl for warmth... and for safety..."

Susie used to have the perfect sister, the perfect boss, the perfect restaurant kitchen to cook in and a man who only needed a tweak or two. Now, everything is changing and all she can do is take it one sip at a time.

"Warm and witty... an excellent read." - Dianne Dempsey in The Melbourne Age newspaper

"I loved this book. I was hooked from page one!" - Jane Porter, author of "Flirting With Forty" and "She's Gone Country"

"Lilian Darcy's writing is wonderful, and the characterizations are rapier sharp." - New York Times Best-selling author Mary Jo Putney
Length : 82,000 words

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This is a real book-of-the-heart for me, and I'm delighted that it has found a new life with Kindle, after going out of print in the original paperback edition.  For anyone familiar with my other books, this one is going to be a little different.  It's more bitter-sweet, and less centrally focused on the romance.  But there most definitely is a romance, and there's the focus on family bonds and family challenges that my books always contain.  There's also a lot of coffee, so you may want to have a cappuccino or a latte or an espresso close at hand, while you're reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read May 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved this book. It's written like a diary but is much more than this. It's an exploration of relationships, different kinds of love, food, life-changing events and choices, all beautifully and evocatively written, with plenty of wit and humour. Basic plot: Susie is a chef and her boyfriend of several years, Jody, has a new money-making idea to run some `new-age' workshops that Susie doesn't really approve of, but goes along with. He wants Susie to participate as a `plant', without acknowledging their relationship. Meanwhile, Susie's sister (and best friend) Karen is in hospital recovering from a serious accident which has changed her not only physically but personality-wise as well and Susie must come to terms with this. At the same time, Susie is coping with issues at the restaurant where she works. I liked the way the different threads of the story were interwoven and the use of flashbacks. All in all, a very enjoyable and thought-provoking read, highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Australian book May 22, 2011
Format:Paperback
This was a great read! Funny and sad and true. I have read some of this author's romance novels and really enjoyed them, but this is different and even better, really well-written. There is still a lovely romance, but it doesn't take centre stage. Some of the characters were so real they could have walked out of my life and onto the pages. There were incidents that made me laugh out loud and others than made me wince in recognition. I loved the descriptions of coffee and food, and the atmosphere of Sydney, where the book is set. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an easy-to-read story that sill has heart and meaning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read August 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this book when it was first published on paper in Australia and loved it then. Lillian Darcy is a fabulous writer and I'm just so delighted that Cafe du Jour has been released on Kindle so that readers in the US and the UK can enjoy it as much as I did.

I was not sure if I liked the diary type of format. I usually prefer mysteries or thrillers but this did hold my interest.

It was interesting the way she rated each day with a cup of coffee. I did not like all the foul language.
