Interesting read, should have been longer,
By
This review is from: The Cage (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book even if it seemed like a quick read. I felt that the characters, and there were some good ones, could have and indeed should have been fleshed out with more backstory.
Though action packed, paceing was a bit staggard which is one of the reasons I felt it should have been longer. Don't get me wrong, I was not sorry I purchased the book, only that there was not enough of it. Maybe the next effort by the author will improve on this.

Don't stay in 'The Cage.',
By Kody Boye "Horror Author" (Idaho) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Cage (Paperback)
Jason Brannon's The Cage is a novel of many different things. It's a novel of how being on the other side of the law can get you into trouble; a novel about how a family can be going through a difficult time; and it's a novel about pure horror.
The Cage doesn't take too long to hook you. Within the first few pages you're wanting to read more, especially when you're wondering what Captain Jack Omaha has for his clients to `hunt.' Little do they know that Jack Omaha isn't all he is to be. But, Jason has a way of switching so easily-so smoothly-into a different setting that it makes you upset that you're leaving your favorite part, which is why you continue reading. The action is well done, the suspense is non-stop, and the ending leaves you wanting more of the story.

Very Cool!,

This review is from: The Cage (Paperback)
The Cage by Jason Brannon is a brutal shocking horror story that entwines fantasy, fiction, and a whole lot of fear together to make an amazing read. Brannon's descriptions and details of his characters is like watching a movie. I can clearly picture all that is going on, and I have to say my favorite part is Sister Mary when she "goes along for the ride," with Teddy. There were a few minor typo's but that didn't deter me from reading this great story, and let me tell you I really loved Jason's view of these creatures.
Captain Jack Omaha and his Cryptozoological Fair and Freak Show is out to mess up the lives of an uncountable amount of people. Jack himself had experienced such trauma when tracking a creature that was unknown to existence, that he sought out people who were looking for the thrill of the hunt to feed his own sick ego. After meeting 5 rich office type hunters, Jack unleashed the Sasquatch for the men to hunt down; unbeknownst to the men, he also let loose a second creature, The Dragon of Bone Island. Grant Peters is trying to piece together his relationship with his wife and kids. They are now at The Preserve trying to have a nice family weekend. Jack Omaha has once again unleashed his creatures into the world, The Dragon of Bone Island tracked him down, releasing some of the most dangerous creatures in the world. The Windego, The Beast of Exmoor, and The Chupacabra are all wondering around in the zoo, maiming and eating whatever or whoever they can get a hold of. Now Grant's daughter, Crissy has been snatched up by one of the creatures and he's playing games with her... dangerous games. All the while Teddy is trying to be a hero, he was one out of the group of guys that actually survived The Dragon and was now out to make this all come to an end. He must take down The Dragon, as well as the rest of Omaha's creatures. But he does have a little help, the ex-nun Sister Mary is along for the ride, providing him with the info he needs... only she is riding along in his brain. Curious? Get a copy and find out what I'm not telling you! 4.5 Hearts [...]

Let me clear something up,
By Shawn "Twister" (MS , USA) - See all my reviews

I want to echo that this is a fun read and it hooks you and keeps you in the action. I do want to clarify one statement from the previously posted comment. The Cage is not a self-published book. KHP is a legit small press publisher. Wanted to clear this up in case any other readers out there might be hesitant of picking this book up if they think it is self-published. Pick up a copy and see if you can escape...THE CAGE!

No one escapes The Cage,

Captain Jack Omaha has a traveling sideshow. He sometimes can be hired to provide a specimen for a hunting party, unfortunately, the hunters become the huntees. Omaha shows up at a zoo, hawking his attractions, but he also has other plans for them. Omaha wants people to suffer the way he has when he captured these beasts. See, Captain Jack deals with the cryptozoological style of specimens. Some of his creatures are the wendigo, a Jersey Devil, Beast of Exmoor, Sasquatch, lizardmen, merfolk, and the nastiest of all - El Chupacabra. He tortures them ruthlessly and then sets them loose on others. Today he selected a zoo and the unfortunate dysfunctional Peters clan is in for a day of horror they will never forget.
I'm leery of self published books but this one hits home with enough pow to make it worthwhile. There's a few things that bothered me in the details such as the inexplicable way of how fast the corpses of dead things are rotting or how there's a nasty storm yet the flies are still present outside. None-the-less, this is a fairly quick paced story and if you like the crypto-critters, this is one heckuva fun read. Could be easily turned into a good horror movie. Glad I decided to buy this one.

This book had an interesting story revolved around monster legends, however, was a dissapointing read overall. You could relate it to a goosebumps book without detailed descriptions of backround stories, character description, and the addiction to turn the next page. Many grammatical mistakes are quite noticable after the first 80 pages or so. I will admit i am horrible with grammar n punctuation, but that just points out how obvious these mistakes were. This book seemed lazy n rushed, would not recommend buying this book even to the most diehard horror enthusiasts.

Good monster book,

This is a gruesome tale about a traveling freak show. Creatures only thought to exist in legend are real. Omaha, a monster hunter, has found these creatures. Everything from the Loch Ness monster's babies to The Chupacabra is on display here. When these creatures get loose in a zoo full of people the carnage begins. It's fast paced, real fast. But upon reading the first page I was hooked and had to know how this ended.
While everyone is dieing the monster hunter himself and a family trying to mend broken hearts are the main characters. There are 2 other characters that put a good twist to the story, a cop gone wrong and a psychic ex-nun. This book isn't for the squeamish and I must say, after reading it I have this urge to play Zoo Tycoon: Complete Collection and let the animals out on the little zoo goers. It's a great book, it's easy to see it play out in your head and I'm sure it'd make a decent movie.

The action of this book occurs too fast paced. Characters (& especially the monsters) are not completely fleshed-out. Readers would like to know more about them, what makes them be what they are. The story & premise are good. Perhaps the author will rework this someday into a very good novel. It might also make an awesome movie. But readers need more background for story.
