4.0 out of 5 stars mixing the production, but the fights are here, December 3, 2000
This review is from: Caged Combat 5-DVD Boxed Set (DVD)
First off, I've got the DVD set. There are but 53 fights (55 if you count the two championship "fights" listed as fights but in which one of the competitors could not fight due to injury in their semifinal match - so they just walk out to the ring and concede the fight).

Production quality is poor, but varies from disk to disk. One disk has a few noticeable spots with bad macrovision encoding. Also, the disks are not numbered nor listed anywhere in chronological order so if you watch the disk labeled 1 first, you find out who is the tournament winner on 2 other disks, which leaves you knowing the winner of 6 of the fights before they begin - more than 10 percent of the fights, and by the time you've watched 3 videos, I'd guess you know the results of more than half the matches on the remaining ones.

The fights are raw. Some are out and out brawls, but, due to 7 ounce gloves, there is little blood. Some events in this "no holds barred" contest have significant rule changes - the Montreal fights allow no headbutts, some rule with respect to elbows, no striking a guy on the ground when you are standing, etc., that significantly detract from the quality of the fights (this is the only time I've ever seen a fight actually get stopped to let a fighter take a breather after an illegal blow).

A lot of fights seem to have been stopped by the ref prematurely, IMHO, for the saftety of the fighter. All said, I wouldn't compare the average quality of these fighters to UFC or Pride, but they are the equavalent of minor league stuff, but there are a few significant exceptions.

1.0 out of 5 stars Picture quality (VHS box set), December 7, 2001

You really get what you pay for in this tape set as far as video quality is concerned. Let's forget about fight quality/content and focus on footage/picture quality. ALL 5 of the tapes are recorded in EP! HORRIBLE EP I might add! Although the fine print on the box and on the tape labels suggest "highest quality EP", that's really so far from the truth. Don't get the VHS edition if you're looking for a good quality picture. I only tolerate EP from tapes I record myself off of TV, not when I pay money expecting professional quality footage. Remember, this rating is only for video quality on the VHS edition and not for quality of the fights. There are plenty of other reviews here that judge the fight quality.

The fights on here were raw and rugged, kinda like the early days of UFC. If you are into wild fighting and lots of tapouts to strikes, this is for you. The production was so so, but the sport is very new and you are bound to see this at this stage. Nice to see some early fights on John Lober, Paul Varelens, and BEST OF ALL #1 heavy weight in the world Igor Vovchanchin. Igors fight are worth the price of this tape alone!
