This review is from: Cahaba Prison (Library of Alabama Classics) (Hardcover)
In researching my huband's family history, it was discovered that one of his two great-uncles who served in the Union Army during the Civil War was captured and incarcerated at Cahaba Prison. He, James Caldwell, survived his imprisonment at Cahaba and was aboard the SS Sultana on the Mississippi River just north of Memphis, when a boiler exploded as it was carrying freed prisoners and other passengers North. His body was recovered, identified and buried in his hometown of Litchfield, Michigan. As no one in the family is alive today to relate James' story and he died before he was able to share his war and POW experiences, this well written account of a black mark on the history of the United States where brother fought brother, adds information to our family history and brings closure to a life lost too soon! Even if you did not have a relative who fought in this awful carnage, it brings home the tragedy of conflict that continues among brothers all over the world yet today!!!
