Nice book but not the Caillou my daughter loves,
By Christina George "Christina George" (Southern New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Caillou: Potty Time (Hand-in-Hand series) (Hardcover)
My toddler LOVES Caillou. I've learned that there are two types of Caillou books: the ones that show Caillou just like the television cartoon, and the ones that are not. If you want to make sure any Caillou book you order is the same as the tv series, make sure it says it is from the "Clubhouse Series" NOT the "Hand-In-Hand" series. My daughter still likes the books from the Hand-In-Hand Series (and the other ones) but doesn't realize they are supposed to be Caillou. She likes this book too but does not realize it is supposed to be Caillou because it looks nothing like the cartoon character.

right idea..wrong words,

Our 2 1/2 year old LOVES Caillou so naturally, we thought a potty book with Caillou would be a hit. On one of the first pages, Caillou gets a new potty and PUTS IT ON HIS HEAD! We understand kids goof around and the message, I'm sure was meant to show that the new potty isn't scary but I am 100% certain had we read that page to our son...sooner than later his potty would have been on his head too...just like trusted Caillou. Wrong end Caillou. We still love Caillou but this book was not for us!

This book is a nice tool in helping with potty training, especially for children familiar with the character Caillou

I'm a bit disappointed with this one, but my little one (2 and a half) likes it a lot because he's a true Caillou fan. It uses a euphemism ("have to go") instead of stating what Caillou is actually doing with the potty. To my son "to go" means literally GOING somewhere, like out the door and to the playground, so I made some edits by putting a piece of tape over the word "go" and writing "pee," which is the term we use in our family. I understand the need for neutral language that the authors anticipate will not offend parents, or be applicable in most situations, so I don't really fault them for this.
The book also has some confusing language about Caillou wanting to be free of his cumbersome diaper, and for me, too much emphasis on "wanting to make Mommy happy" by using the potty, instead of the practical and intrinsic benefits. I covered some lines with tape again, just so that it's easier for me and other adults to read it aloud in a consistent way that makes sense to junior. There is a risk of your child mimicking Caillou's accidents, as another parent posted, but so far that hasn't happened with us. We're OK with transitioning to the potty as a long process, and are not in a hurry. Overall my son enjoys this book so it gives us opportunities to discuss the topic and familiarize him with the process again and again. It's not perfectly written for us, but then I don't expect that any potty book really is. Also the cover of our book is different from the illustration above, apparently done by a different illustrator, so I am assuming the drawings inside may also be different.

This book was one that our son really loved to read and he could really relate with Caillou. Caillou was learning to use the potty and going through some similar experiences just like a lot of young children. I think this book really helped keep our son's interest level high and gave him a extra boost of confidence during this new stage in his life. I would highly recommend this book for little one's. Also, the pages are very smooth and it's a nice size for a child to read on their potty.

My grandson loves aillou but this book places much emphasis on pleasing his parents instead of doing it for himself. Ugh. And the euphamistic language is insulting.

Simple easy read. This book doesn't go into alot of detail, probably best for the child who has not yet started potty training.

I bought this book for my grandson. He loves Caillou and is just about ready to start potty training. The quality of the book is excellent but the problem is that the characters do not even vaguely resemble the television characters. My grandson did not recognize them but he still loves the book.

I was letting my son let me know when he was ready to potty train. He would sit on the potty here and there but not regularly.
I bought this book for him and it was our "potty time book". Every time he went into the bathroom we would read Caillou. It took my son a few DAYS before he was potty trained. I got so lucky with him! No bed time issues or anything. My oldest son (age7) still struggles with that. We just love this little guy. My son wanted to ride a big boy bike just like Caillou's, which also helped the potty training along!! |
