Book Description

"I don't know much bout borrowin' greenbacks from banks and such, but I know a pot full bout borrowin' happiness from this sad ol' world," Myrtle declared, her voice straining with her back as she bent to check a skillet of cornbread in the oven. "There jist isn't enough to go round anymore. And when a woman can snatch a few good years outta Father Time's hip pocket...why, yessiree...she can count herself luckier than most." So declares one of Paul Raphael’s many vivid characters illustrating and enlightening this one-of-a-kind storybook of recipes.

Whether it’s the French Quarter or the swamps and bayous of his native state, the author employs them as the stage for his humorous, romantic or reflective narratives, entertaining the reader while lending sensuous depth to the Cajun dishes he describes. Even the photos seem edible, the recipes coming alive in their colorful depictions.

An epic adventure, this volume 1 of the coming series, Cajun Cuisine and More, serves as sumptuous hors d'oeuvres for the feast which follows. Value it as a treasure-trove of time-tested Cajun recipes, or adore it for its bumbling, lovable, all-too-human characters; either, or both, make this a must-have for family and friends, a gift to be remembered by its frequent use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Food for Thought May 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
As a Louisiana native now living in Texas, I can be transported home with just the turn of a page in this enchanting book. Photos of the enticing recipes are so vivid the reader can almost smell the dishes. The humorous and heartfelt stories assure the reader that the author is so much more than just the "chef". I am watching closely in hopes of perhaps a novel by this talented writer???? MP, Longview, Texas

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Cajun cookbook June 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book has all the recipes you could want from a Cajun Cookbook, with all the favorites you're looking for. The stories and humor add to the flavor of the book and I was transported back to the bayou with every page. This would be a good cookbook for anyone interested in cooking Cajun. The recipes are authentic, well thought out and easy to follow. Some cooking experience would be helpful as these are all 'from scratch' recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars ****GREAT READ**** June 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I agree with the other reviewers: the photos are spectacular, the regional history is informative sometimes amusingly so - and the humor is, as they say in Louisiana, just lagniappe (a little something extra)!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read and delicious recipes! June 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I cook a lot. I mean, REALLY a lot. Its my favorite hobby, and I love feeding people. I also love reading cookbooks. My husband and I joke that he LOVES reading manuals, and I say so do *I* - FOOD manuals! :)

I got this as a free e-cookbook and I would have to say it is probably the best one I've downloaded so far. I'm familiar with Cajun cooking and food, and the recipes are very authentic. The photography is lovely, and this e-cookbook has the type of formatting that I would dearly love to find more prevalent in e-cookbooks.

In addition, the author has included snippets of his poetry, writing, silly
Cajun jokes, and stories about Louisiana.

Not only a wonderful cookbook, but a great read, and a mini-vacation to Louisiana!

5.0 out of 5 stars DeweyDecimal exercise May 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A veritable crash course on the Dewey Decimal System, this little book is bursting at the seams with History, Biography, Geography, Philosophy, Religion, Fiction, Humor, Poetry, and, of course, Home Economics, as applied in the Art of Cooking. An avid reader, I will feast on this one repeatedly. The recipes are easy to follow, and most rewarding. Five Stars!
