More About the Author

I was born in New Orleans and attended Newcomb Colleege and Tulane University where I hold a Master's Degree in English and Art. From 1982 until 1994, I taught Children's Literature at Tulane and wrote a column, Reading, Writing, and Children, for the Times Picayune, New Orleans' only daily newspaper. I am the author/illustrator of more than 24 picture books, four YA novels, and three how-to books with Eric Suben, former editor-in-chief of Golden Books (see website for total list of published books).
I have been married to James Amoss, former CEO of Lykes Brothers Steamship Co. and now president of Sea Point. We have six sons, six beautiful daughters-in-law and twelve wonderful grandchildren. We have lived in Hawaii, Germany and Belgium, and now in New Orleans and on the Gulf Coast in Pass Christian, MS. Our house in Pass Christian was destroyed by Hurricane Camille and then by Katrina. The newly rebuilt one has survived both Gustav and Ike.
In my 83 years, I have never missed a year of attending art school. After family, my main interests are art, writing, fishing and gardening.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cajun culture comes to New England, April 16, 2000
By
This review is from: Cajun Gingerbread Boy (Hardcover)
I was fortunate that I could share the Cajun Gingergread Boy book with my kindergartners accompanied by an audio tape, the result of a large group of teachers sharing an Internet project based at ( ). We passed the book around the country with a taped reading by a real Louisiana teacher. She included a printed pronunciation guide for each receiving class to keep and refer to after the book left us for the next stop. Sharing the Cajun Gingerbread Boy book and comparing it to other versions was a wonderful way to learn about and be exposed to other cultures. Many of the teachers will be purchasing their own copies of the book and using it each year for Mardi Gras themes each year. I recommend the book for every kindergarten and primary classroom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific variation of an old favorite!, November 4, 1998
By A Customer
We used "The Cajun Gingerbread Boy" in my son's kindergarten class in conjunction with many activites, for example, cooking, art and writing projects, based on the story. The children loved the delightful Monseur Crocodile, and loved being able to take the gingerbread boy piece from page to page. This is a great book to use with more traditional renditions of this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yummy!, November 10, 2002
This review is from: Cajun Gingerbread Boy (Hardcover)
I purchased this book for my three-year-old while in Nawlins in May 2002. What a joy! My daughter loves pushing the gingerbread boy cutout through each page into each new adventure. Unfortunately, with two young children my opportunities to head to New Orleans again in the near future are slim...
My only complaint about this book is that there is no addendum that provides the phonetics for proper Cajun pronunciation.
