Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The title?and the cover illustration of an exultant pig flourishing a cake?suggests some of the high spirits and simple pleasures of this rhyming book, as fluffy and sweet as seven-minute frosting. The steps of making the cake follow a counting rhyme: "One, two, get out the moo./ Three, four, open and pour." This doesn't work very well once he gets to "Eleven, twelve, take sugar from the shelf./ Thirteen, fourteen, measuring, sorting." But Meisel's (Engine, Engine, Number Nine) sunny illustrations of the pig sifting, grating and spattering batter with an electric mixer, beaming beatifically all the while, carry readers through any trip-ups in the text. The pig decides that it would be even more fun to share the cake with friends than to eat all by himself. The appended recipe (and measurement conversion information) will guide kids through making a chocolate-chip cake, to hog or to share. Good thing, because this book will put readers in the mood for a snack. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-Piggy mixes and bakes a cake that he plans to eat all by himself. However, when visitors arrive, the happy cook discovers the joy of sharing with friends. The rhyming text follows the format of a familiar nursery rhyme, "One, two, get out the moo./ Three four, open and pour," counting all the way up to "Nineteen, twenty...'We hope there's plenty!'" Large, double-page spreads feature cartoon animals set against bright yellow backgrounds. Piggy is pudgy and charming as he moves around the kitchen. An explanation of measurements and recipes for Polka-Dot Cake (with chocolate chips) and Choc-O-Lot Frosting are appended. A tasty treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Attention Teachers!, December 11, 1999

This review is from: A Cake All for Me! (Library Binding)
This book is excellent for preschool through kindergarten, or special ed classrooms. Skills that are learned from the book include: rhyme/rhythm, counting 1 to 20, measuring and cooking.(There are two pages devoted to measurement, as well as a recipe for the cake.) The best thing about this book is that the pig learns to share, because he sees the value in sharing with his friends. This is an excellent book to help one teach this value.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun-filled trip through counting, baking and sharing!, September 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A Cake All for Me! (Library Binding)
My 2-year-old son memorized this book, learned to count to twenty, AND learned the basics of baking a cake. We even made the cake described in the book, and it tastes great. The illustrations are hilarious, and I love the lesson about sharing. (Will piggy decide to share his cake with friends??) In fact, I love the book as much as my son -- a rare and happy circumstance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable, November 15, 1998

My 2.5 year old loves this book - we read it almost every night. It is a good way to re-inforce counting. The book takes you through the steps to bake a cake and uses easy rhymes like "five, six - sift and mix". At the end of the book is a real recipe to make a cake. We had a lot of fun making it and eating.
