This simple wire cutter helps level any cake up to 10 inches in diameter. I have several other cake cutters including one that looks like a saw. Each has a purpose and function, unfortunately each requires practice to master. The wire cutter is the easiest one to use and yields consistent results.

There are certain techniques that will insure you get the best results:
(1) Never cut all the way through a cake, if you try, it will pull the cake apart. Instead either rotate the cake to complete the cut; or put your hand on the cake where the wire is coming out; or use a knife to finish the cut

(2) The cut will only be vertically straight as you hold the cutter handle. If you dip or raise the handle, the wire will make a wavy cut.

(3) If you planning to torte the cake, start with the top cut and use a cookie sheet to lift it off. Repeat for all other cuts. Reassemble using the cookie sheet to keep from breaking the cake.

(4) If the cake is bigger than 10 inches, try cutting the edges as far as you can from all sides. This will leave a small section in the middle that is uncut. Use a long knife to complete the cut making sure you follow the cut made by the wire cutter. Remove cut cake using a cookie sheet to keep it from breaking.

For those who have found their cake tearing or pulling out at the end, try rotating the cake as you are cutting (with a back and forth sawing motion, although horizontally). That way, when you have rotated the cake completely around, you will not be pulling the slicer out the side as before, but rather it's more like connecting the cut around the circumference of the cake. Imagine a clock hand sweeping around a circle... If you are planning to cut lots of cakes, or want perfection, this may not be the slicer for you.

I love baking just for fun so I'm not too keen on spending lots of money on more novelty type things. I saw one of these locally for ~$30 so I passed but for less than $10 I thought I'd try it! It may not be professional grade (but can you really expect that for the price), but honestly I don't know what it's like using professional grade baking equipment. This works for me. I've made gorgeous layered and tiered cakes. It's SO simple and hardly any cake is wasted. The size IS adjustable so don't be scared off by the image.

This cake slicer arrived and when I measured it was only approximately 10" or so. I returned this item I need it to be the size advertised and it was not.

**update: repurchased I found other uses for this.

Makes torting easy. I will say I usually have to start my cut with a knife then switch to the leveler. Nice price for it.

I made a full cake recipe in a square spring-form pan and used the cake slicer to cut the cake into thirds. It was quick and easy to use. There are notches on the sides to help make sure the wire is at the same level on both sides. I cut the bottom third first, then raised the wire and made the second cut. It made a clean cut through the cake. Since each slice was thin, I used two long spatulas to move the slices.

Pros:
Tall enough to fit over a tall cake.
Cuts through the cake easily. (I used a little bit of a sawing motion as I sliced)
Slices are uniform

Cons:
Can't think of any, but I have only used it once

Summary:
I recommend this product. I wish I had bought one a long time ago. I will probably never serve simple two-layer cakes again. I plan on making extra icing and slicing all my cakes in the future.

This product is ok,great for squaring edges of a tray cake or triming corners to give a unique cake shape, but not as good for its designated job, rarely cuts clean and often pulls through the cake as opposed to slicing, this is not used often as it isnt reliable every time, but again, great for shaping a cake for a unique shape.Side to side motion is often not possible unless you make a 8" round cake or a small tay cake(brownies and the like),dont get me wrong, its worth the few $$ just for shaping as my wife uses it for that purpose.I found just two pieces of food grade plastic blocks are ideal for slicing a cake in half with a knife, evenly cut, simple.
This slicer isnt gathering dust,it is used, but not as frequently as it was bought for.

I only used this one a few times and the rubber on one of the feet came apart/tore and almost ruined my very pricey solid wood counter top, which I have had for over 20 years without an incident. Then I purchased the one with the flat plastic feet, only about a dollar more, and it is terrific. I personally am surprised that Wilton would even offer this flimsy version, or should include extra rubber ends to put on as needed. And after reading one of the other reviews, might be a good idea to include an extra wire also. An overall un-Wilton like product.

After reading the reviews on this product, I was a little concerned it might be a waste of money. However, after having used this on several occasions, I can't complain whatsoever. I will admit that sometimes you may have to use a knife to make a small slit in the side of the cake before placing the leveler where you'd like it, but after that cutting the rest of the cake top off is a breeze. This has saved me not only time, but lots of frustration compared to leveling a cake free-handed. I would definitely recommend this product!
