Very nice edition of the novel that was originally published in 1930 and is published here in this special edition to celebrate Maugham's 80th birthday. Inlcudes an 8pg. preface by Maugham and facsimiles of 4pgs. of the manuscript. The book has cream calf & navy blue boards with gold gilt top edge and uncut pages. Minor chipping to the top and bottom of the spine panel and a bit to the far bottom edge. Near fine in a near fine black slipcase. Also included is a small 52pg. catalog published only in an edition of 1,000 for an exhibition of Maugham's writings held in 1958 at Stanford University. Illustrated with one portrait of Maugham.
