I bought this pump, hooked it up, and it worked for less than 24 hours. I assumed that it must have gotten clogged, so I examined it and couldn't find any debris. I could get it to pump for a brief period of time by unplugging it, shaking it around a bit, and then reconnecting but who wants to do that 10 times a day? I contacted them and found that they'd replace it but only if I shell out more money to ship their defective device back to them. No thank you.

Another problem with the device is that the power cord is only 6' long. That's probably fine if you're going to use it in an aquarium, but for an outdoor water feature it's unacceptable. I don't like using extension cords outdoors on a long-term basis.

A couple years ago I bought a UV light that was dead out of the box and recently discovered that it was also a Cal Pump product. I've owned two Cal Pump products and neither have worked. Quality control seems to be a serious problem with this company so I will avoid them in the future.

I bought a fountain at an upscale local garden shop and it came with the Cal Pump 140. I kept having to reset the dial; at first I thought it had stopped working. So I'd have to adjust it on a daily basis to keep the water pumping. Used it for about 3 months and then this year the pump is dead. Now I have this beautiful fountain piece without a pump and I refuse to pay $40 plus shipping for a pump that never worked right in the first place.

This is my second pump. The first one lasted six years. Here in Minnesota I run the pump from April until
the first freeze in the fall. The first pump runs fine but one of the impeller fingers broke off so there is not enough
flow for my fountain.

I've used this pump for an outside garden for quite a few years. They last about three to four years before they get tougher to restart after cleaning the intake, which isn't bad considering the price and how much abuse these pumps take. (Their intakes will eventually fill with debris and sometimes the water empties and the pump runs dry.)

I run a drip line from the sprinklers into the fountain so the fountain's water is replenished three time a week. The only other task is to hose out the fountain about 2- 3 times a month to keep the water clear (chemicals make little or no differnce, interestingly).

As far as the six foot electrical cord goes, it's no problem. If your fountain is in the garden, you really want a safer metal conduit run to the fountain anyway and if the fountain is on a patio, you can just use an extension cord.

Great bang for the buck.
