This is NOT the Calamity Jane Soundtrack!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Calamity Jane (1953 Film) / Pajama Game (1957 Film) [2 on 1] (Audio CD)
This is a good CD, but if you are looking for the original soundtrack recordings from Calamity Jane, you will be disappointed. It should be entitled, "Doris Day Sings Songs from Calamity Jane."

Two fine scores and good idea of pairing them...but both have been given better sounding transfers on other Cds.The Columbia Records 10-inch Lp of CALAMITY JANE contained 8 tracks (all of them are on this CD.) 4 of the tracks ("The Deadwood Stage", "I Can Do Without You", "Higher Than a Hawk" and "Secret Love") are taken from the film soundtrack. The other 4 songs are studio recordings by Doris Day. This was probably done to keep album costs down, since she was already under contract to Columbia and they could avoid paying the re-use fees for the other singers. Example: "'Tis Harry I'm Plannin' to Marry" is not sung in the film by Doris Day - It is sung by Allyn McLearie (ane never sung complete.) "The Black Hills of Dakota" is sung in the film as a quartet, and "A Woman's Touch" is a duet. The versions recorded here are solos. Ths was common with many of the other Columbia so-called "soundtrack" albums including RED GARTERS, LULLABY OF BROADWAY and I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS. This Cd transfer has some problems... there is strange crosstalk in "I can Do Without You" that sounds like another tape being rewound backwards at fast speed. And there is a skip (!) in Howard Keel's "Higher Than a Hawk. THE PAJAMA GAME, on the other hand, was a 12-inch Lp with all the tracks taken right from the soundtrack. When this collection was first released on Lp in the late 1970s, three songs from THE PAJAMA GAME were dropped to fit the program on one side. Those three tracks are added here as "bonus tracks" but not in their proper place. ("Hey There" comes after "I'll Never be Jealous Again:; "Steam Heat" after "There Once Was a Man" and "7 1/2 Cents" after "Hernando's Hidaway.") THE PAJAMA GAME has been given an even better CD transfer on the Collectables label.

World-wide Hit & Top Soundtrack !,
By A Customer
This review is from: Calamity Jane (1953 Film) / Pajama Game (1957 Film) [2 on 1] (Audio CD)
These soundtracks CALAMITY JANE backed with THE PAJAMA GAME are fine examples of Doris in the 50s ! Apart from the US "Love me or leave me" Soundtrack CD this is the ultimate one to have. CALAMITY..... features her million selling international hit "Secret Love" as well as other now trade-mark songs of Doris in her role as the wild west's fiery, loveable lady (which also features the voice of Howard Keel). As for PAJAMA..... it's a lively musical combining Doris's strong vocals with a chorus of singers from the movie and who could forget "I'm not at all in love".

Original Recordings,

Columbia issued a 33 1/3 rpm in 1953, called "Doris Day & Howard Keel in Calamity Jane" which contains 8 tracks. The cover claims that these tracks are from the original movie soundtrack of the Warner Brothers production. Howard Keel was under contract with MGM, and the cover notes that his participation in the album is "courtesy of MGM".My sister has the original album. If you check under the Doris Day CDs there's one with the original album cover for Calamity Jane combined with "I'll See You in My Dreams".

Calamity Jane,

With all due respects to Ms. Day, the reason I bought this was because I thought it was the SOUNDTRACK which implies that Howard Keel would be on the tracks. My favorite being his rendition of the Black Hills. I was VERY VERY disappointed that he was not. Ms. Day's singing is great, but there should be a disclaimer that it is NOT the SOUNDTRACK.

Calamity Soundtrack,

Hi all: I was around when this movie first came out. I don't believe there ever was an actual "soundtrack" recording of this film released on record. I believe it had something to do with the label Doris was contracted to at the time. The only record I have, and I collected soundtracks faithfully back then, was pretty much like that one combining Calamity with Pajama Game. Correct me if I am wrong. Ron

Tin Sound Ruins Great Soundtrack,
By A Customer
This review is from: Calamity Jane (1953 Film) / Pajama Game (1957 Film) [2 on 1] (Audio CD)
I bought this recording as I loved the film version of the Pajama Game. However, the sound is often too 'tinny' or too brassy sounding. Also, for some reason, the order of the songs on the cd is out of sync with the order in the film. The "Finale" was put before "Hey There" , "Steam Heat", and "71/2 Cents"..so for those of you who think the songs were omitted, double-check your cd!! Of course, it's possible they were dropped by mistake by the company..I bought mine a few years ago. I wonder if the newly remasterd version, released last year, sounds any better?

Pajama Game Soundtrack,

This review is from: Calamity Jane (1953 Film) / Pajama Game (1957 Film) [2 on 1] (Audio CD)
The CD of Pajama Game's soundtrack is missing one of it's major songs -"HEY THERE". The song is one of the score's major assets - a lovely hit ballad sung by John Raitt. The CD would rate a Five Star if this wonderful song had not been omitted.

I was thoroughly disappointed to finally discover a cd w/tracks from the foot-stomping, whip-smacking, grand old musical, Calamity Jane, starring the one and only Doris Day. I have searched everywhere and have only found 3 cds-calamity fans. This one w/pajama game, another w/i'll see u in my dreams and the play version-which i must add, only has such unforgetable tracks as "I've Got a Hive Full of Honey", and "Harry I'm Planning to Marry" and so on. Sadly, it is not the movie cast we have loved over time, so if anyone finds the same kind of soundtrack in the movie version-please inform me!!!
