5.0 out of 5 stars Skank will conquer the world, July 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Calango (Audio CD)
Calango is the second album of this Brazilian band. Calango is a rhythm of the Northeast side of Brazil, similar to samba. But basically, this is a rock album. They brought different styles to rock such as reggae, samba, calango, making this album so great, that it's impossible not to move a single part of your body while you're listening to it. For those all over the world who wants to know something different, Skank is our postcard.

5.0 out of 5 stars este cd e legal!, January 9, 2000
This review is from: Calango (Audio CD)
Skank has three albums out now; This one, Calango, Siderado, and O Sambo Pocone. All three are excellent mixing reggae and ska, which are the strongest of the influences, with carimbo, calango (brazilian influences) and rock. Of their three albums, I consider Calango the best. For reggae fans this group offers a re-inventive approach to reggae with a strong seductive bass, alluring horns and pulsing rhythms.

I was living in brasil when this album came out. As another reivewer said, there are a lot of these songs that were on the radio. They were infectious. I just loved it everytime I was on the bus and they started playing. I purchased this album and it has by far become my favorite album. If you are going to buy one album, this is the one to get.

I'm not sure which genre this music is in. It's got a bit of everything. When I lived in Brasil, Pagode, Samba and Reggae were all huge. I think that it has a bit of each in Skank.

5.0 out of 5 stars Que Otimo! Este CD e bom demais!, August 25, 2000
This review is from: Calango (Audio CD)
Living in Brazil, there was a song I kept hearing on the radio, and just HAD to have it . . . I hunted it down and sure enough it was "Pacato Cidadao," the last song on this CD. This album is fantastic--witty, both lyrically and musically. Both "E Proibido Fumar," where he sings about how he has trouble kissing girlfriends in no smoking areas, because of how hot it gets, and "A Cerca," an argument two neighbors have over a fence that gets REALLY personal, are hilarious. And the music is infectious, with definite ska, reggae, and alternative influence. Great stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Skank, June 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Calango (Audio CD)
This is a great album - I've had it for five years and I still listen to it regularly.

I lived in Brazil for 3 years and Skank is one of my favorite Brazilian bands - I recommend all their albums, even the hard-to-get first one.

You don't need to understand the words to the songs to feel the greatness of the music but if you take some time for a translation you will see what a great social commentary their songs are.
