I have mild osteoporosis, and my doctor has prescribed that I take at least 1200 mg of calcium per day. She also wants to see me taking at least 800 IU of vitamin D along with it. However, I have been aware for some time that other minerals are instrumental in maintaining bone health. Magnesium is an important mineral that most people are deficient in, and without magnesium, calcium is not properly absorbed. Vitamin K is also needed in small quantities for bone health, along with zinc and boron. Phosphorus is a very important mineral associated with bone mineralization, but it is so abundant in the foods we eat that it is not necessary to supplement it. A quick study of essential minerals for bone health on the Internet has confirmed these findings to me. Common knowledge would have it that calcium citrate as well as other formations of calcium are superior to calcium carbonate, but studies published on the Internet tell me that this is not necessarily true. For most people, all forms of calcium are metabolized OK.

From reading other peoples’ commentaries, it seems that people take calcium for many different reasons, and have different reactions to the calcium they take. In general, the body will not absorb more than 500 mg of calcium in one dose. So, when taking doses of calcium, it is well to split it into several doses per day, taken with food. Most adults only require 1000 mg of calcium per day, but aging women need at least 1200 mg of calcium per day. Magnesium is dosed at about one half the number of milligrams of calcium that you take. So if you take 500 mg of calcium, it should be accompanied by vitamin D as well as 250 mg of magnesium. Vitamin K and the other micronutrients are well to have combined with your calcium supplement if you are taking it for bone health.

I take these vitamins for easing my muscle tension and anxiety. I could tell a difference in several days. My only complaint is how large the pills are. The might be hard for some people who cannot swallow large pills.

According to the article "Magnesium bioavailability from magnesium citrate and magnesium oxide" in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Vol 9, Issue 1 48-55, Copyright © 1990 by American College of Nutrition Magnesium oxide is not an absorbable form of Magnesium. Magnesium citrate is absorbable form according to the research. If you would like to read the research yourself it is available on scholar.[...].

On the other hand, my wife who is pregnant felt relief from her muscle cramps which were not responding to increased potassium intake(magnesium is required to utilize potassium) and she say's that these pills did the trick.

UPDATE 3/12/10: As it turns out, Boron, which is an ingredient in these pills, decreases losses of magnesium by an unknown mechanism. So she is probably not absorbing the Magnesium oxide, but the boron made her lose less magnesium to the point that what she was getting from her diet became adequate.

I began taking Calcium Citrate in the tablet form on the advise of my doctor to relieve IBS symptoms, and after finding that it helped, but it didn't completely solve the problem. Then I began taking Coral Calcium, which was available at Walmart, in the Softgels. I found that to be the answer, but Walmart discontinued their product line in favor of the Nature's Bounty brand, which was in capsule form. After trying that, I was back to where I was before, with full IBS symptoms. Then I found the Walgreens brand of Coral Calcium, which was in the Softgel form, and I found that it relieved my symptoms entirely. But they also discontinued their brand in favor of a regular dry capsule form of Coral Calcium. Thinking that it was the quality of the Coral Calcium, I tried all of the top brands, sold on the Internet, that I could, all of which were either in Capsule, or the powder form. Again I was back to full IBS symptoms, each time.

Finally, I thought it must be the Gel Capsule that makes the difference, not whether it was Coral or Calcium Citrate, and I tried this brand, which is delivered in a Gel Capsule. Well, lo and behold, I haven't had any IBS symptoms since taking it. It is 1/3 the price of Coral Calcium, and it does what I need it to.

I just ordered and received this product. I am usually suspicious when they don't show you the back of the package or state the amount of pills it takes to receive the advertised strength on the front of the bottle. There is a statement that to receive the best results "take three softgels daily". The description also states " Schiff Super Calcium-Magnesium softgels contain 1200 milligrams of calcium combined with 400 milligrams of magnesium, 800 IU of Vitamin D, and 3 milligrams of boron that help with calcium metabolism". Why don't they just say that each soft gel contains 1/3 of the listed values on the bottle? Let the buyer beware! I rate them two stars for lack of honesty, the product itself may be very good, time will tell.

I gasped when I opened the bottle and first saw these! I know Schiff makes quality supplements, but these are enormous! Even in a softgel, they are very hard to swallow. 1 inch by 3/8 inch. Why can't they make them half that size so I could just take 2 reasonably sized capsules at a time? It also says to take them 3 times a day, so this bottle is only a 30 day supply. And I hate having to take a lot of pills all day long. The calcium tablets I usually take are time released so I only need 1 a day.

Pros: I'm sure these are high quality. They also contain Vitamin D3, Magnesium, and Boron.

I wonder if I could break these open and add to food or a drink. I might try that.
