5.0 out of 5 stars Fixing A Stalled Diet
I love this book because it offers a way to "unstick" any diet. And all
diets get "stuck" sometimes. I was also really impressed by the level of
research and with how easy and fun it was to read. I never knew that just
having a snack at bedtime could help burn fat overnight. I didn't know that

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Calcium Diet (Hardcover)
One thing I love about Amazon is the opportunity to read reviews which helps me decide if I should purchase a book.
Thus it was great to see a number of reviews written on "The Calcium Diet". But as I read the reviews I noticed that they all were written in the same time frame. They all were written by "a reader" and they all said pretty much the same thing and some included plugs for Ms. Kayes website.

Ms. Kaye's previous book "The Skinny Pill" (see my review) was disappointing. So could her new book. "The Calcium Diet" deliver?

Recently studies have shown that calcium is a nutrient that can curb cravings and help your body burn fat. Another book at Amazon, "The Calcium Key" is written by the researcher behind many of these studies. The calcium weight loss connection is so interesting I did a quick web search to see what else I could find out. There was some disappointing news. Perhaps calcium is a key in weight loss BUT guess who sponsored many of these studies; The dairy industry and others who would benefit, according to what I read online.
I hope this did not effect the results of the studies. I am not saying calcium does not aid in weight loss only that the if the sponsor of the studies is the industry that sells dairy...well it makes me wonder.

In Edita's newest book she no longer looks at the skinny pill (chitosan and other supplements) as the miracle pill to blast fat as she did in her previous book. Now she claims calcium is key. In her book she recommends you take 1,200 mg calcium in 3 daily divided doses. As I mentioned previously many of the studies were sponsored by the dairy industry. But there is still the possiblity that YES calcium does work to promote weight loss. However, in the original studies fat loss was found to be greater if you EAT DAIRY as opposed to INGESTING SUPPLEMENTS. Edita's plan involves taking supplements.
I do think calcium can help, in a weight loss program. If you ate a yogurt for a snack for example, the combination of protein and carbs would do more to help you control your appetite than if you ate cookies. So perhaps calcium can help you shrink in size. However, I would like to read more studies that do not have a vested interest in the results.

Then Edita goes on to suggest a diet to use with your new calcium supplementation plan. Let's see meat, fish, chicken, veggies. Sound familiar? Yes its the low carb high protein plan, with some twists. After week 1, Edita suggest you add spicy condiments to raise your metabolism and in week 3 you add diuretic fruits like tomato, parsley and lemon to make you lose your bloat by running to the restroom.

If you follow Edita's low carb plan you will lose weight. But will you be able to stick to it and keep it off? And be sure to check out who published the book.

I love this book because it offers a way to "unstick" any diet. And all
diets get "stuck" sometimes. I was also really impressed by the level of
research and with how easy and fun it was to read. I never knew that just
having a snack at bedtime could help burn fat overnight. I didn't know that
it was important to make sure that calcium supplements and calcium are
spread out over the whole day, and not taken in one dose. I also didn't know
that drinking caffeine, too much could block calcium, and so now I have a
reason to include at least a couple of decafs. But mostly I liked that I
could stay with my favorite diet, add calcium and get "unstuck".

1.0 out of 5 stars Egg noggin anyone?, December 5, 2005

The basic premise about adding calcium may be true because it will make you feel fuller. However, you can get the same info on-line from any search engine. Save your money and read the latest health buzz from more reliable sources.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheesecake is back, January 21, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Calcium Diet (Hardcover)
I just finished reading the article about The Calcium Diet in FIRST for
Women magazine and I just had to get the book. Not only is it smart,
easy-to-understand, but the 21-days of menus are awesome. And my husband,
who is lactose intolerant can also get the benefits with an additional
special set of menus for people like him. And since I love to cook, but
often don't have time, the recipes look fun, easy and quick. I can feel
myself getting healthier already.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Recipes I've Seen In Ages, January 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Calcium Diet (Hardcover)
I think this book has the best recipes I've seen in ages. I know we are all trying to diet, but diet food gets boring and it seems its always the same. Edita has breakfast recipes, like Chocolate Breakfast Whip...I love getting my chocolate fix early. She has great snacks, shakes and smoothies that are really different and tasty. She has lunches with great soups, and awesome imaginative salads. There are dinners, like Salmon Bugers and a terrific tasting and good looking Stuffed Tomato recipe. But my favorites are the Bedtime Snacks and Desserts--try Pink & Blush Trifle; Cheesecake Cookies and Cinnamon Apple Tart. If this is the way to get thin and lean, I say "let's eat".

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide To New Calcium-Related Weight Loss, October 13, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Calcium Diet (Hardcover)
I have just finished reading this incredible, comprehensive book, and although I knew calcium was important for bones I had no idea that my weight management success was also dependent on the amount of calcium I got every day. This makes paying attention to daily calcium intake so much more motivating.
I particularly liked the fact that there were not only 21-days of menues for people who like their calcium through dairy foods, but a special 7-day menu plan for people like me, who are lactose intolerant but who still want to benefit from the fat fighting power of calcium. I was very impressed with this book. And I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who wants a healthier way to lose weight while still enjoying food favorites and getting quite an education besides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thinking Thin, February 24, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Calcium Diet (Hardcover)
Of all the diets I've ever tried, this one has been the most successful. I weighed in at 175 pounds. My ideal weight should be 110 pounds. I lost 50 so far!

Also, the book is well-written, humorous and most interesting.
