Book Description

December 6, 1990 0195208943 978-0195208948 2
This book provides a straightforward account of the physiological mechanisms which regulate the concentration of calcium in the extracellular fluid, and the diseases which upset the homeostasis of calcium. In this revised and updated edition, new data concerning the mechanisms of hypercalcemia of malignancy, the calcium exchange mechanism between bone and extracellular fluid, PTH-related protein, interleukin-6 and the new generation of biospheres is presented. This volume also covers principles underlying calcium homeostasis and the roles of bone, kidney and gut, as well as major hormonal factors. Hypercalcemia of malignancy and hypercalcemia associated with osteolytic metastases and hematologic malignancies are also stressed. Throughout, the author examines causes, clinical features, differential diagnosis, and treatment. This excellent, accessible account is an outstanding reference for both practitioners and researchers.

Editorial Reviews

Review

From reviews of the first edition: "Mundy has produced an excellent work for both the general and specialist reader." Lancet

Praise for the Second Edition: "A simple, straightforward presentation. . . .Exceptionally well written and well developed. The author has a most lucid and consistent style, which renders most chapters effortlessly readable. . . .This book deserves a prominent place in the libraries of both primary care practitioners and clinical and academic subspecialists; it will provide them with a valuable resource and reference text." Annals of Internal Medicine

"This monograph on calcium metabolism fills a void. It is a single-authored work of excellent quality that encompasses the basic and clinical aspects of calcium homeostasis. . . .Dr. Mundy's prose is crisp and very readable. Although each of the chapters can easily stand alone, there is adequate cross-referencing, so that the reader can gain a fuller understanding of a given topic by reading related material provided elsewhere in the book. . . .Well designed and of high quality. . . .The abundant line drawings are of excellent quality and well referenced." --The New England Journal of Medicine
