One of the only comedies I'm proud to own,
This review is from: The Calcium Kid [Region 2] (DVD)
I'm not a huge comedy fan myself, so I was kind of iffy about buying this movie. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a cute movie, yes I admit I am an Orlando Bloom fan, but still. It was a cute, feel-good movie. It got a little slow a few times, which is why it only gets 4 stars with me, but all in all it is a great movie.

Orlando Bloom does his best acting in a tiny, poorly funded movie from his home country. Bloom is a down on his luck milk delivery boy, who works out at a gym. Because he drinks so much milk, his bones are rock-solid, and he ends up being pushed into being a boxer!
Bloom is completely believable as a young man out of his element, surrounded by false friends, and bewildered by fame. He should do more movies like this one.

I've been seeing this movie's title in DVD shops around the city but didn't think much of it, expecting it to be some random B-movie. Surprise, surprise. It turned out to be an interesting and really, really funny piece of work. Shot somewhat like a documentary, it chronicles the days leading up to a legendary boxing match between a boy-next-door-like milkman (Orlando Bloom as Jimmy Connelly) and a major boxing champ. The things Jimmy goes through in a few short days are funny, unfortunate, and quite a treat to watch. The dialogue is snappy, there's quite a handful of laugh-out-loud moments, and the ending's pretty good, and definitely not what you might expect from a plot that swirls around a David and Goliath-like bout.

I can't believe that this film was not released in the US. I bought it for a friend of mine who is a huge Orlando Bloom fan, and it's a hilarious movie, probably one of his best. It really shows that Bloom has a comedic flair, and can play more than just action period pieces.

I saw this movie while in Spain travelling on a bus down to Sevilla. We all cracked up so bad at this film. i went to great lengths to get it in region 1 dvd cause its almost impossible to buy in the US. but a funny movie. I remembered all his father's lame quotes and the part where he makes fun of the mexican american boxer in spanish is hilarious

Bland Orlando Bloom Vehicle,

"The Calcium Kid" is a light comedy, mockumentary style, that presents the toothsome Orlando Bloom as "Jimmy,"an average -- well, somewhat below average in brains, actually--milkman. Through a combination of bizarre circumstances, Jimmy ends up-- in his own, home, English town-- boxing one Jose Mendez, world champion. It has its mild moments, none of which you haven't seen before, and it plays as though its makers bought a second hand script. The supporting players, headed up by Michael Lerner as Artie Cohen, Mark Heap as Sebastian Gore-Brown and Omid Djalilili do the best they can with what they've got, as they say.
Bloom plays rather bland and wooden here, not that the script gives him much chance to be anything else. However, let's face it, he is gorgeous, and we get to see quite a lot of him: including quite a lot of bare-chested screen time. Speaking as a girl who nearly cried herself to sleep after seeing the first Denzel Washington movie in which he did not take off his shirt, I consider that to be worth something. Isn't it?

"The Calicum Kid" is a wonderful tale of an, "Adverage Joe" type person (Actually a milkman) who, unexpectidly, ends up fighting a world champion boxer. It is a story of dedication and has many surprises throughout the film. So, if you have not seen, "The Calicum Kid" see it! I'm sure you'll love it!
