Book Description

This modern calculus textbook places a strong emphasis on developing students' conceptual understanding and on building connections between key calculus topics and their relevance for the real world. It is written for the average student -- one who is mostly unfamiliar with the subject and who requires significant motivation. It follows a relatively standard order of presentation, with early coverage of transcendentals, and integrates thought-provoking applications, examples and exercises throughout. The text also provides balanced guidance on the appropriate role of technology in problem-solving, including its benefits and its potential pitfalls. Wherever practical, concepts are developed from graphical, numerical, algebraic and verbal perspectives (the "Rule of Four") to give students a complete understanding of calculus.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best calculus book that I have encountered, January 22, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I own several calculus books and I have found that Calculus: Concepts and Connections by: Robert Smith and Roland Minton to be the best presentation that I have read thus far. The authors actually wrote a text that "teaches" the reader instead of just slapping the reader around with difficult to follow theorems and proofs with only a few examples (for those who learn best from following formal proofs, all of the important proofs are presented either in-text or in the appendices). I often found after reading various sections of the text I would say to myself "Oh, that makes sense.", instead of the alternative "Huh, what's going on?". I would even go so far to recommend this book to those who are self-studying mathematics. This text will give you a well-rounded understanding of the calculus and since it was published six years prior to the time that this review was written, it can be found for a reasonable price online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for Calculus III (Multivariable Calculus), March 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I had this book ever since Calculus I and never used it until Calculus III (Multivariable Calculus). The book is organized nicely and the authors do give an ample amount of examples. Overall, this is my favorite calculus book.
