I had never heard of the Saxon Math Series until I took a math course from the Great Courses/Teaching Company. It was here where Math Professor, Dr. James Sellers briefly mentions this book, as he took part in the reviewing/revamping process prior to its second edition release. The layout of the book is a little different than what you might find in other Calculus books from the past, and possibly even present day books. As some of the previous reviewers already alluded to, this text is designed to promote long term retention and skills, by using an Incremental Development process, and Continual Practice and Review. I believe it accomplishes both of these goals. This is because as you move forward and learn new things, there are several times when future problem sets contain additional problems from previous chapters, and I found this to be a good idea. This basically helps sustain your initial foundation, and as you build upon more challenging concepts in succeeding chapters, you keep a solid foundation along the way while learning the new concepts. The book is laid out where you can self-teach, practice all the problems given, and then check them with the step by step solutions manual. I would definitely recommend this home school kit/course if you are rusty in calculus and need a refresher, or if you just want to get a head start on learning Calculus. It's all here...and you will be amazed at what you can do on your own with a good, well thought out Calculus course/kit like this one. Ordering directly from Amazon was great; the kit was on time, packaged neatly and professionally. I will continue to order from Amazon and Saxon publications in the future.
