About the Author

Soo T. Tan has published numerous papers in Optimal Control Theory and Numerical Analysis. He received his S.B. degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles. "One of the most important lessons I learned from my early experience teaching these courses is that many of the students come into these courses with some degree of apprehension. This awareness led to the intuitive approach I have adopted in all of my texts."

Tan's Calculus presents a relatively standard smattering of collegiate calculus 1&2 as well as 3. I noted that UT Arlington specifically teaches a few chapters out of order, and with good reason. Volumes of revolution, Area of revolved surfaces and other integrations are presented somewhat early (ch. 5), right before techniques of integration (notably trigonometric substitution and integration by parts).

-> The work's chief weakness is it has been very carefully written to only be useful with a professor's guidance. Many of the key concepts (especially theorems) are simply dropped with perhaps a shabby proof rather than explanation. Friends majoring in mathematics and physics at other institutions picked up on this lacking right away with the text.

For being nearly 1400 pages, this text is very much a course reference rather than educational device. Though concepts often lack explanation, the text does manage to use a great deal of space for specific case examples which give narrow insight to directly related problems. Unfortunately, rarely is the connection from one example to another drawn or even existent such that one could find broad application of the example problems.

Most amusing are the historical mathematician highlights which almost never tie the person described into the text. Most are placed in the wrong chapter for their contributions to mathematics.

If you want to see how to place mathematics in a historical perspective, please look at Morris Kline's works.

A secondary weakness comes from the homework material. Most mathematics texts are good about following a progressive difficulty gradient, as this encourages learning reduces student anxiety.

I learn at least half of my Calculus class materials from this book and the other half from my class lectures and labs. This is definitely a reliable source, and probably my best friend for this semester. I used to take the class without a book and once I purchased this, the differences were significant. Worth every penny (although it can get pricey at times).
If you're struggling, this is a great place to start.

Not a best book for calculus. There are plenty other college level book for Calculus, but this is not the best.
Although it does the job that contains the information to acquire skills.
But when it comes down to recommend this to peer or someone, i would not recommend it.

Bought this text for use in a class; I concur with the review of 'the most critical reviewer'. In addition to all those flaws, I just want to underline that for me, it simply wasn't user-friendly at all. I tried to learn straight from the book; it's a real struggle.
