You squeeze these bags bursting the separator, that keeps the chemicals apart. The bag become cold rather quickly. You can put them directly on an injured joint or sprain in the back of beyond and minimize further injury, until you get proper medical care. Not as useful as a refrigerator, but then, it 's not that heavy either.

Have not opened one up yet as I have had no need.
Great to have in case of emergency or disasters. But I have had neither.
