Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This beautifully illustrated book for children tells a warm, family story in both English and Spanish, thanks to the special vision of Arte Publico Press. Although Mama stands as expert on the creation of a delicious soup/caldo that represents the ultimate in comfort food (it stops sniffles, cures stomach aches, tired feet, or backaches!), the whole family participates--and appreciates. Papa takes the children to buy tortillas, and the whole event turns into a fiesta. The book is excellent for children in families that know the importance of bilingual skills and for those families that know the importance of togetherness.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3. Average-quality ink and watercolor cartoons that make good use of borders and white space accompany a brisk bilingual text that uses rhythmic prose to tell a simple story. On dark rainy Sundays, Mama makes a good hot soup, a soup that "settles the stomach, soothes a backache, massages tired feet." The repeated refrain, "Caldo, caldo, caldo," gives a pleasantly rhythmic feel to a family ritual?making soup (the recipe is appended) and buying tortillas to eat with it. Both Spanish and English texts read smoothly. Not as universal in appeal as Margo Griego's Tortillitas para Mama (Holt, 1981), this title could accompany it at story time or stand on its own as a tale about hearth and home.?Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA

I enjoyed this book very much. This is a terific book to read to young children. The illustrations were beautifully done. I especially liked the way the author wrote in English and Spanish. She was very descriptive and made the story interesting. In addition the story had humor that children could enjoy and relate to. I recommend this book. I give it five stars!

Each year I bring out this book as I teach Spanish to my kindergarten class, and soon during the day you can hear them chanting "Caldo, caldo, caldo!" This keeps up until the excitement reaches fever pitch on the day we make caldo in a crock pot in our classroom... mmm! (Recipe included in back of book!) No other Spanish-English book so engrosses them and makes them want to try different foods and understand the warm, loving atmosphere in a great hispanic home. Super for any classroom!

I'm just learning Spanish at school, and thought that it was easy to follow. I also thought the storyline was very good and pictures very good. I also listened to the C.D. while I followed along and it helped me out a lot. Over all it was very good
