This rest is kind of an oddity, in a way. It's probably not precise enough for a serious benchrest competitor, but it's more than most shooters would need for casual, infrequent use. That makes it just about perfect for me. I shoot regularly in club-level competition, off the bench, at ranges from 100-300 yards. I wanted a solid, heavy windage rest that wouldn't break the budget, and the Caldwell Rock BR suits my needs to a "t". I know of nothing better for less than two or three times the price. Once again, Caldwell has hit the ball out of the park.

This rest is 24 lbs of solid Rock!extremely stable and strong.Micro adjustable for those 1000 yrd shots.

I bought the BR Rock rest after watching several video reviews of the prior model (2009 version). The new model (2010 version) has a redesigned cradle and windage adjusting screw and seems to be a big downgrade from the prior model. The new model simply uses a screw to move the cradle left or right. The problem is that after locking the cradle down, there is a lot of side to side movement in the cradle. I called Caldwell tech support and they had me check the cradle attached screw to see if it was loose, it was not, and I was told to send it back. Amazon quickly (next day air) sent me a replacement, but I have the same issue with the replacement.

The 2009 version has a spring loaded pin that moves between two slides and seems to be a more stable and accurate cradle adjustment process. Visually looking at the two models, it seems the mfg. may have tried lower the mfg. cost by going to a simpler cradle design.

I may end up returning the rest and look for a used on 2009 version on ebay.

After spending $825 bucks on a Farley, I'm wondering why I did after receiving the Caldwell! I bought the Farley for matches and the Caldwell for load development and range shooting. The new slide windage adjustment is a welcome improvement and it just seems the whole unit is better balanced and just feels better than the older model. It's ready to go out of the box but for me I spend some time re-lubricating and making minor adjustments to my preferences. Good weight, smooth operation and solid! No reason for this rest to sit out any BR or F class event!

A very good rest. I have have used it several times and so far I am pleased with it. The adjustments are a little awkward or I would have given it a 5 star. I would buy it again.

If you can't afford a Hart, Farley or other competition rest, this is the next best thing. Do be prepared to modify it, especially for competition, or simply to "fix" the cheap bags you get with it. The thin sandbag shown on the rest is insufficient for a BR rifle.

Without a good front rest bag there is no point in buying this rest. If you just want something to rest the rifle on other than real BR shooting, get one of the cheaper rests.
Other modifications may apply as well depending on how far you want to go.

What makes it worth the money is, you can modify it to make a starter rest for serious precision shooting.
