WOW! I was impressed with my first shot! I was able to obtain some of my best groups the first time I used it. This is a must-have piece of equipment for the serious shooter and the anal-retentive when it comes to accuracy. It basically takes the human element out of the sighting in process. Although the "Plus" model is designed for different weights (i.e. barbell), Caldwell still insists that lead shot is the best form of stabilization (not included). I used 2 25-pound bags of lead shot to place in my lead sled and I don't think I felt a thing with recoil while shooting 140 gr cartridges from my Browning .270 w/ Boss system. As I said, some of the best groupings I've ever achieved with factory ammo. Some assembly is required but this is a well-made product that's very effective. I highly recommend it.

The Caldwell Lead Sled Plus is amazing. I had to site in a 300 Winc Mag, 30-06 and two 12 gauge shotguns. I placed 30 lbs of plates from my weight lifting equipment. I never felt any recoil. Only took a few minutes to setup. Should have purchased one of these years ago.

This Caldwell Lead Sled Plus is beefy and robust. There were two items that needed attention, but Caldwell was very nice and professional in correcting the items. My only suggestion for a later version is a design that allows a bit (maybe 1/2") more vertical clearance from the floor of the weight tray to the frame above it. The weights I found at Walmart were a tight fit. In any case, I can't wait to use it soon!

This worked great for sighting in my new rifle and scope while saving my arm for freehand practice shots afterwords.

I bought the Caldwell Lead Sled after many years shooting off of sandbags. The sandbags do ok, but are really a hassle to use. I had just scoped two black powder rifles and really wanted to dial them in. I also wanted to work on my .30-06 as well. So what better time to get a real rifle rest. All I can say is I should have bought one years ago. I went to a local used sporting goods store and picked up two 25# barbell weights for cheap to put in the trey on the bottom of the rest. The trey is shaped to accept a couple lead shot bags or barbel weights. With the 50#s of weight, the weight of the rest itself and the rear holder for the butt of the stock, you can shoot all day without developing a flinch or getting a sore shoulder. I have my rifles dialed in now and my Knight black powder gun will put shots touching at 100 yards. In fact, I will be pulling out the rest and the rifles this weekend to get some practice before the upcoming deer season.I will add one minor complaint, the front rest is a little wiggly when cranked up very high, but that is probably to be expected since it is a single, threaded post. It has not affected my shooting though as I mentioned above I can get shots touching at 100 yards.

For reducing felt recoil this is really handy tool. I will always use it to get a big bore hunting rifle or shotgun zeroed or patterned. For people like me that enjoy shooting really tight groups this is not the correct tool. The rest does not hold the weapon secure enough to get those small groups. I have a Sako 75 in 300 WSM that will shoot 1/4 inch to 1/2 groups all day, using this device I was hanging in the 1 inch 1 and 8th groups. I put the ol' trusty sandbags down and she was back to the smaller groups. I would love to see a device such this built to tighter tolerances so that it would be possibe to shoot little groups without getting beat up. LOL I also had a buddy that kept yanking the trigger and pulling his point of aim off. Using the lead sled he finally was able to feel what he was doing wrong, so it's valueable training aid as well. I will always have one in the gun room from now on. Great tool, for reducing felt recoil, I may take my .338 RUM Prairie Dog hunting next time I head that direction.

Caldwell Lead Sled Plus Recoil Reducing Rifle RestWell built & well suited for conventional rifles. Not designed to be used with an AR style rifle since the upper bar does not have near enough clearance for the hand grip - needs to be moved to one side or the other about 3"(glad I can weld).

A very good rest the only thing it needs is a adjustment to hold the gun left and right. Great way to weight down the rest.

I use the sled with about 42 pounds of 2x2 steel bars for weight. I have 3-1 foot sections welded together. I painted them, added a little adhesive foam around where they make contact to avoid any rubbing and slipping. I just keep them in the weight area - I do not take them off the sled. If you want to use round barbell weights, it is hard to find much more than 25 pounds that will fit the space. I don't think you can find 2 thin weights like in some of the Caldwell pictures. I think those two weights are from very old home-style weight sets. I found one 45 pound round weight at Wal Mart but it was about 1/4" too tall to fit the space. Bags of lead shot would probably give you the most weight but lead shot is very expensive now.
The sled does absorb virtually all recoil. The sled does slowly creep back on the shooting bench due to recoil. The front rest is okay - don't expect your rifle to come back to the same aim point after each shot. You will still have to make minor adjustments in your aim. The front bag allows some minor adjustments by adjusting the bag or your pressure of the rifle in the bag. The sled makes your rifle sit much higher and significantly increases the length of pull. So you will have to work to get close to a "normal" shooting position. I can't use it with my AR style rifles because the magazines hit the bar. Seems pretty well made, easy to assemble. I use it for load development to help eliminate my error during group testing. It does a good job at eliminating movement before the shot. |
