I read this so many decades ago I can hardly remember the story line. I do remember it as a rather strange story - a love tragedy. It starts out with mythical gods toying with humans - to sacrifice some poor soul on the alter of love. And then the earthly story unfolds.

I can't even remember much on the details of the story, except that overall it was very memorable, and I was very engrossed in it - promising myself that such a cruel fate would never befall me. And never realizing that my own life would have its own strange twists on love gone awry.

The story is the epic we all sooner or later encounter - that despite our very best efforts and intentions, we have but very small influence in our own destiny when it comes to matters of love.
