Perry's ALL-ORIGINAL RE novel CALIBAN COVE is a marked improvement upon the sterile UMBRELLA CONSPIRACY. This is because it is ALL-ORIGINAL. Perry is able to excercise some free will about what she thinks about the Resident Evil thing. There is less mindless zombie action and some more character interaction. The dialogue possesses a little bit more flair. But this book...

Caliban Cove is the first original novel based on the survival horror storyline from the popular Resident Evil games. Author S.D. Perry deserves kudos for delivering the expected goods and keeping them fresh, threatening, and interesting. The story picks up shortly after the events at the Spencer Mansion have concluded and the surviving S.T.A.R.S. members disgraced by the slimy tentacles of the Umbrella Corporation. Adding insult to injury is the discovery that their own organization is a part of the monstrous conspiracy. Raccoon City S.T.A.R.S. team member Rebecca Chambers joins up with a Maine based branch that is intent on digging up evidence of Umbrella's misdeeds at the company's Caliban Cove facility. What the team does not know is that the unstable scientist in charge of the research there has become completely detached from reality, creating an army of zombies and monsters and a plan to infect the world with a stronger, airborne variant of the T-Virus.

The pace of the book is every bit as quick as The Umbrella Conspiracy, but it reads far better. More like a story than a playing out of a video game's puzzles and obstacles in narrative form. Perry shows she has both a solid grip on the ideas and concepts that drive the games as well as a talent for expanding those into an entirely new story without loosing touch with what makes the universe of the Resident Evil games so addictive for its numerous fans. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A non-stop thrll ride, October 27, 1999
I regret I didn't read this book the day I got it. I let it sit for a few weeks and when I fnally picked it up and began to read, I was totally blown away by it. It opens up with some espionage action, then an all out fire fight. Rebecca even killed someone! Even the trip to Caliban Cove was interesting, with a new enemy waiting for them. I'm trying not to spoil it too much. And Karen, John, Steve, all new characters, all marvelously well done. Unfortunately, it would be a good idea not to get too attached to these characters, the end is quite a surprise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rebecca Chambers is Back in Action!, December 27, 1999
This book was fantastic! I was immediately enthralled the second I picked it up. If you're a fan of the Resident Evil games, you'll definitely like "Caliban Cove". It doesn't follow any particular storyline of the games, but the references and familiar characters from the games are very enjoyable. It's also very suspenseful. You won't be able to put it down until you finish it! Even if you've never played Resident Evil, but you like sci-fi horror/action, you should check this one out. If you don't...then you should probably skip it. That's my two cents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Resident Evil:Caliban Cove,book review, December 10, 1999
By
tim white (Anaheim,California) - See all my reviews
Death, destruction, mayhem are many of teh events that occur in my book,"Reident Evil:Caliban Cove." I thoroughly enjoyed reading S.D. Perry's novel, its 242 pages were very suspenseful, and action filled."Resident Evil:Caliban Cove" takes place in Maryland on a shore-sided chemical facility that has been involved in many chemical related accidents and the S.T.A.R.S. (special tactics and rescue team) is sent in to investigate these accidents.Rebecca,Steve,David,Karen,Barry make up the S.T.A.R.S. team and Dr.Griffith, trisquads, are the chemical facilities main characters. The S.T.A.R.S. discover that Umbrella (teh chemical company) is using a virus, of some genetic means,to make bio-weapons of destruction. While investigating the S.T.A.R.S. encounter many of Umbrella's bio-weapons and they discover that the T-virus is what is producing these grotesque monsters. The T-virus however infects on of the S.T.A.R.S. members and the uninfected members of S.T.A.R.S. try to find a cure for the T-virus,while trying to stay alive and they uncover a hideous plot within the Umbrella company's employee, Dr.Griffith.1 "golden line" in "Resident Evil:Caliban Cove" is when Barry says,"These monsters are the creation of a mad man that is just is just as hyness as his bio-weapons."The cover of "Resident Evil:Caliban Cove" portrays Rebecca of the S.T.A.R.S. running while shooting at one of the the bio-weapons created by the T-virus.The title means that evil is a resident in Caliban Cove.I would reccomend this book to anyone who has played the video game in which this novel is based upon, anyone who enjoys the game will enjoy this book. If you are new person to the Resident Evil series you might find this novel hard to get, but it has a great plot and it is just what a person looking for a suspenseful horror novel, you will find that "Resident Evil:Caliban Cove" will satisfy any horror novel fan or Resident Evil fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars The first original Resident Evil novel, October 24, 2003
Caliban Cove is the second installment in the Resident Evil novelization series and the first original work of the series written by S.D. Perry. After the events of Umbrella Conspiracy, Caliban Cove serves as an interlude between the events of Umbrella Conspiracy and City of the Dead, with Rebecca Chambers (one of the survivors of Umbrella Conspiracy) teaming up with fellow S.T.A.R.S. operatives and infiltrating a lighthouse base where more grotesque Umbrella experiments are being conducted. Naturally, everything goes wrong, people die, and blood runs like water. Caliban Cove has it's share of unexpected twists and turns, but it just isn't as compelling as the previous and proceeding novels. Although this isn't the worst in Perry's series of novelizations (that would belong to Underworld), don't walk into this one with too high expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is it really as bad as people make it out to be?, January 27, 2002
By A Customer
I honestly thought this was the best book in the series (It is by far my personal favorite). Most reviews on here tend to shoot it down as long, drawn-out, and boring. It really just depends on your reading interests. I thought that it was very cleverly written and had some great twists (Zombies with guns, that was great ^_^). Perry did an excellent job using the characters from the first RE game and she kept their personalities in tact, which is an amazing thing in itself. Even better, she didn't make Rebecca as sappy as she was in the game (Though the game wouldn't have been the same without her way-too enthusiastic cheerleader-type voice). I believe Perry did a great job writing this book and should be given credit for great writing. It's always better to read original works than rewritten works or works written based on something (Though her adaptations of the games were excellent). This book really does deserve 5 stars, and I suggest anyone who is a fan of the series read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Original and spectacular, October 7, 2000
By A Customer
I wasnt sure at first when i got Calbian Cove been a Resident evil fanatic and after reading the Umbrella conspiracys i was not certain wether or not SD Perry could write a totally original story based on the franchise. But fears vanished when i started actually reading the story is an original and compelling idea were the Tvirus is capable of controlling people not just turning them into zombies. The story has many twists one of the best is where one of the members of S.T.A.R.S becomes infected but enough on that. Cove sees Rebecca from the first book and game as she battles alongside new S.T.A.R.S members to stop a mad man from unleashing the dreadful t-virus. I think it was good of S.D Perry to use Rebecca because i feel she in the first book had very little part to play. The other characthers range from been really original to extremely boring. If i had any major complaint about this book it would be the creatures they are all pretty bad apart from the Zombies with machine guns but the others are rubbish and seem to me to be a bit over the top. While over the top may sound stupid coming from a series like Resident Evil i feel that the author must try and stay faithful to the original creatures like the Hunters and so on. Anyhow enough blabbering on what iam trying to say is buy this book because it is trully fantastic

5.0 out of 5 stars Rebecca Chambers in the spotlight..., March 2, 2000
This was a great book that I found very enjoyable. We finally got to see a more mature side of Rebecca that was not painted in the first few Resident Evil series. This book was very creepy even as it also involved describing the process of becoming a Tri-squad, a variant of the zombie, when one of the stars is infected. What are you doing still reading this? 5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent Resident Evil book, November 27, 2010
Unlike the first book in the series, Caliban Cove is an original novel made up entirely by the author and not the novelization of a specific game. That being said, it still contains the same familiar Resident Evil characters and atmosphere. Rebecca Chambers takes center stage in this one, and she is a worthy main character. This book is fast-paced and exhilarating, and you'll find that you can't put it down until it's finished.

5.0 out of 5 stars These books get my son to read, February 14, 2008

Having never read these books myself, I can only tell you how I feel about them as a parent.

I love them.

My son is reading again. When he was little, he used to love reading. But as he got older, he started hating it. Imagine my disappointment when, as a writer, my son doesn't like to read. Fortunately, it was just a matter of finding a subject matter that he liked. He loves playing the video game version of these books, so I thought I'd pick one up as a lark and see if he'd read it.

He didn't put it down for a solid week and read the whole thing cover to cover. I'm so pleased.

As a parent, I'm not as concerned with the subject matter (for the most part) as I am with the reading itself. If these books can interest my son in reading, then they are worth ever penny of the list price.
