Book Description

When did wildcats first start living with humans? What do you call a cat with no tail? Which cat is a symbol of good fortune? Calico the cat answers these questions and many more as she shares a family album that features fabulous felines from around the world. Tildes brings the animal world to life again with her striking full-color paintings of over 20 unique and beautiful cat breeds.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-Calico acts as a feline Roger Caras to introduce some two dozen breeds of cats. From ancient relatives like the Egyptian Mau to the more modern Scottish Folds, and including such genetic peculiarities as the Munchkin and the Sphynx, Calico presents snippets of information about the cats' geographical/historical origins, physical characteristics, and temperament. Tildes's soft watercolors portray this array of felines in standard colorations and in settings evocative of their national origins. A final global map invites young ailurophiles to locate the origins of their favorites. The attractive picture-book format and simple text will entice youngsters, and the accurate descriptions will satisfy their curiosity and spur them on to more difficult sources. A pleasant parade of pussycats.

More About the Author

Phyllis exhibited artistic talent at the age of two and a half when she presented her mother with a drawing of a butterfly, followed by a man selling peanuts at a peanut stand. She was anxious to follow her older brother and sister to school in Stratford, Connecticut, where she was soon writing poems and stories to illustrate and give to family and friends.

As a child she was always curious about nature and enjoyed exploring in the woods behind her home. The Limbacher house was always filled with pets and an occasional wild, orphaned animal.

Phyllis was a voracious reader and loved her town library where she selected stacks of books for summer reading. She would often climb onto a branch of an old chestnut tree outside the library to read a book and study the detailed art of one her favorite illustrators like Arthur Rackham and Beatrix Potter.

After graduating with honors from high school, Phyllis attended Rhode Island School of Design where she received a B.F.A. as an illustration major. She spent her senior year in Rome as a European Honor Student. For her senior thesis she wrote and illustrated an eastern European folktale for children titled Sasha.

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter and I loved this book., March 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Calico's Cousins: Cats from Around the World (Hardcover)
As soon as we got Calico's Cousins, my eight year old daughter read the entire book. Several days later, I decided to reread it with her. I was thrilled to find such a wonderful children's book. It is incredibly interesting because it presents so much information about breeds of cats that most people have never heard of before. It has beautiful detailed illustrations on every page but it is not a mere picture book.

Here is what my daughter says about it. "This book is cool because of all the different kinds of cats and all the information about the cats. My favorite cat is the Birman Cat. I love its blue eyes."

We recommend this book so highly, that we are going to buy a copy of the book for our local library.
