About the Author

The Federal Writers Project (FWP) of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) not only provided jobs and income to writers during the Depression, it created for America an astounding series of detailed and richly evocative guides, recounting the stories and histories of the 48 states (plus THE Alaska Territory and Puerto Rico) and many of the country’s major cities. David Kipen has written the introductions to reissues of the WPA guides to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego. He is Southern California Public Radio's book correspondent, and the founder of a lending library/used book store east of Downtown Los Angeles called Libros Schmibros. Past book editor/critic of the San Francisco Chronicle and director of literature at the National Endowment for the Arts—where he led the Big Read initiative Kipen is the author of The Schreiber Theory: A Radical Rewrite of American Film History, and the translator of Cervantes’ The Dialogue of the Dogs.

Four stars for content. Unfortunately this Kindle version is one-star. For some reason the letter "F" is missing in almost every word in which it should appear. If you want to read it on Kindle I recommend the version you can buy for $1.99. It doesn't have the modern introduction but at least you don't have to figure out what every other word is supposed to be. If Amazon ever fixes the reprint I would absolutely recommend it.

This book is probably most interesting for folks who've lived in California a long time. There were dramatic changes in California starting with WW II. There was a big military buildup--and lots of the folks who went through training in California and sailed off to the Pacific decided to stay in California after the war. The book is fairly dry--unless you were here in the 50s and early 60's and can look back at the changes that occurred after this book was written. In that case it's a fascinating look at what was, but no longer is California.
