4.0 out of 5 stars Train has changed April 17, 2012
Format:Audio CD
There's no denying that Train has changed. Starting with "My Private Nation" the band has progressed from a simple college band to a more mainstream rock group, "Save Me San Francisco" was their reintroduction back to the masses. A great return and it shows they learned a few things on the way. "California 37" is in many ways a continuation. Familiar sounding tracks but taking it a few steps further. Much how drops was a continuation of Train. The opener 'Maybe this'll be my year' will remind many of billy Joel's 'we didn't start the fire', some would call it a sad rip off but i digress. It is a good solid opener. Then we have 'bruises' a duet with the ashley monroe. Would probably hit big in the country charts with enough pop flavor to do decent on the POP charts. Very charming tune. Next is '50 ways to say goodbye' a flamenco infused quirky but fun driving rock tune. I find myself leaving this on repeat because It's so infectious, and rather funny. The title track is rather odd, a soft rap tune that for all purposes is a bit of an ego booster, and at the same time a small 'thank you' to their fans, and a promise they won't ever off course again. Mermaid smells of Enrique iglesias. Same Spanish style, quirky yet fun high energy song with a small ode to johnny depps famous pirate character. Makes me think the last pirates movie inspired this song. For those that get the itunes deluxe edition you get the song off the Taylor lautner movie Abduction, called 'to be loved' a typically rock movie single. Nice addition as that single can't be bought without buying the soundtrack.

This is a no-pretense album, designed to do one thing and one thing only--give you a good time. The doing of this takes some rather interesting turns. The album opens with a "We Didn't Start the Fire"-like-timeline of recent events, ending in a touching recounting of a first kiss, and a rousing chorus. You've probably heard "Drive By" by now, but if you haven't, it is an uptempo emotional tune couched in a singalong chorus--"I swear for you/I'll be there for you/this is not a drive by". 50 ways to say goodbye opens with a flamenco like figure including a trumpet line, and provides a nice showcase for some over the top singing, before it segues into a country flavored rocker, and it says a lot that these two sections are made to meld together with believability. The best part of the song is the emotional bridge, which has a passionate and soulful "I want to live a thousand lives with you/I want to be the one you're dying to love/ but you don't want to" over a catchy beat. There are gentle moments here as well: "We Were Made for This" is a tribute to the surprise and pleasures of true love sung over a chiming guitar, slowly building to a climax. In all, this is a worthy successor to "Save Me, San Francisco", drenched in guitar and California sunshine, leavened with heartbreak and love. It's just plain-ole good summer music, perfect for your trip down the PCH.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best! April 23, 2012
By Lyddi
Format:MP3 Music
This is seriously one of trains best albums! Its catchy lyrics and foot tapping beats will have you up singing and dancing in no time! Once you listen to this cd you just feel like your on a sandy beach in california with the sun beating down on you especially with tracks like "Mermaid" , "Sing Together" And of coarse "California 37". But since this train you can also excpet heart felt lyrcis in tracks like "When The Fog Rolls In","We Were Made For This" And "Feels Good At First". If you loved Save Me San Francisco you will LOVE this album! It will have you laughing and crying! Trust me your not wasting your money at all buying this album it will have you at the first song! The only downside you'll find is the same downside i found.......Its so short! I enjoy it so much the time just seems to fly by when listening to it! Bottom line if you love train you need to get this album!

Why didnt Train release Mermaid as their second single?
Because they were crazy?

Haha, Mermaid was probably one of my favorites if not my favorite on this album.

Anyone want a CD like Train's first self-titled album??
Personally, I enjoy each new Train CD less and less. The first 2 albums, plus the "One and a half" [EP] were when they were best, as a 5-piece. The "Pat Monahand band (version)" 3-piece is too pop for me, and off the mark for what they were doing originally. I appreciate... Read more
