The log which the regulator and fittings are connected to is made out of a really cheap pot metal. If you have to replace female air fittings be careful not to tighten it like you should. It will break! At least there is another location on the side of the log to put the fitting and the port plug will still seal the broken port with the help of a little sealant. Also the pressure cut off switch has decided to stop working now. Time to contact California Air for a replacement of both.
California Air really needs to reconsider the parts they are using on this. For the price they are asking I would think the could use something better than pot metal for a part that you will eventually need to be replacing things into and a pressure switch that appears to be missing a hose.
But the build quality is low in places and the manufacturer has made some questionable choices when putting the unit together. The welds holding the compressor mounting plate to the tubular frame are porous and poorly made. The tanks are secured to the frame with metal hose clamps, not really a problem, but not very professional looking either. The safety over-pressure valve is installed so it sticks out past the side of the compressor, waiting to get bumped and broken...mine arrived bent from a shipping mishap. The output from the air tank to the regulator unit is routed through the pressure switch using 1/4" tubing. This causes an unnecessary flow restriction. The pressure switch on my compressor was not adjusted correctly, only switching the compressor on below 80 psi. All of the threaded pipe joints are sealed with a thread-locking pipe sealant and many of these parts are pot-metal, the odds are about 50/50 whether the joint will unscrew or one of the parts will break and be ruined. As another reviewer noted, this is frustrating on a tool where gauge and fitting replacement are regular maintenance activities.
The biggest problem with mine was that the unloader solenoid burned out after about a year, and the compressor wouldn't build pressure. If this happens to you, just contact the manufacturer, they'll send you a solenoid, then look at my video for how to replace it. Search for "how does an air compressor work?" on youtube, and you'll see a video by steelddd. Not too hard to do, but I took my compressor apart almost completely before I realized it was unnecessary.
My other problem is that the compressor is not as quiet as it used to be. It starts off quiet, but after it builds to about 30psi, it starts clanging. I'm guessing it's piston slap, or something similar. If anyone knows a solution, please let me know. It's still much more quiet than a normal compressor, but slitghtly annoying.
To run through the rest, mine is the GMC branded compressor, but it's the exact same unit. Despite being called California Air Compressor, it's a Chinese company, with Chinese quality, Chinese customer support, and Chinese manuals translated to English(ish). As an example, the part that is an unloader solenoid, to them is an "electromagnetism". I love the design of the pump assembly (the execution is now questionable). It's heavier than the whole rest of the compressor. The tanks are held to the frame by hose clamps, as others have stated. You can't weld aluminum to steel, but they could've come up with a better method of fastening.Read more ›
Disliked: Poor build quality!
The manufacturer appears they have zero quality control based on the unit i received.
IMO the Box arrived in decent shape and I don't blame anything on shipping. During unboxing I found a small broken plastic piece that I determined was from the power box lid. I found the unit was assembled poorly. The welds are horrible. You do get the recognizable odor of cheap Chinese tools from HF (I dont know what that smell actually is but people know what I'm talking about). The tank support and handle pipe was not welded vertically causing motor and air fitting contact, vibrations, and noise. The power supply box, motor and all the air lines are positioned and/or router poorly. It's so bad! See my photos which do NOT match California Air Tools photos. The power box is actually smashed through the motor (power box lid and side of motor broken)
No excuse for such poor quality control.
I want one that is built correctly! Maybe California Tools can step up and send one that matches the quality in their pictures. I believe it could be a nice machine.
I purchased the item based on specifications/features. I also like the way it looks .
Specs and Notes:
Ultra Quiet only 70 Decibels-I wouldn't say "ultra quiet" but noise level seems very low for what it is.
4.6 Gallon (Rust Free) Aluminum Tank -64 lbs-"Rust Free" sounds awesome. I like the silver paint scheme. The whole assembly is hefty @ 64 lbs. Its awkward when lifting from the handle. Naturally people will lift the unit with the heavy motor side closest to their body but this makes the air filters vulnerable to leg impacts.Read more ›
